Hello Jack
Thanks once again, I wasnt sure if the Village was the full address. You know it is strange my maiden name was Margaret Morton and it seems a wee bit strange seeing me way back in the 1800"s :) . Now for wee Helen Wright, I am thinking that maybe Janet Morton re married a Mr Wright and Helen was his daughter. I am about to go search and see if Janet remarried, as she does show up as Janet Wright in the 1851 census oh what a web they do spin.
Can you please tell me is there a census for 1861, if so next time you are at the archives and a minute to spare would you be able to see if you can find my Mortons :) pleaseee it is the only one I am missing.
Ta Jack

1834 marriage

Post by Jack » Sat Oct 15, 2005 7:57 pm

Hi Margaret,
I've been pretty dense - forgetting Janet was as WRIGHT in 1851
But i'm wondering if this is Janet, and that she was again a widow by 1841?
Son William unthinkingly giving his mother as Janet MORTON on the census? Or maybe to him that was his mother's name!
--
ALLAN WRIGHT
JANET ANDERSON
Marriage: 31 OCT 1834 Neilston, Renfrew, Scotland
[there are LDS submissions for Paisley too]
--
HELEN MCKECHNIE WRIGHT
Birth: 06 JAN 1835; Christening: 21 FEB 1836 Neilston, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents:
ALLAN WRIGHT
JANET ANDERSON
--
I'll have a look at the 1861 Cathcart census as soon as i've got a wee bit extra time!
Will also look at the 1834 OPR marriage to see if it says anything more.

ps later, suppose there's always the possibilty that Janet ANDERSON (as MORTON) wasn't the widow of Allan WRIGHT in 1841, and that he was elsewhere; or they were separated?
I only mention this because Janet, as WRIGHT in 1851 is as married, and not a widow.

Some censuses

Hi Margaret,
Some stuff for you, but you've a bit of work ahead with them!
I notice Janet is as WRIGHT in 1861 too, and again as married....
==
OPR 572 Vol 5 p 149 Neilston (Marriages)
WRIGHT and ANDERSON, 2 days
Allan WRIGHT & Janet ANDERSON both at Pointhouse in this Parish, were booked for
Proclamation of Banns 18th Oct, and being regularly proclaimed, and no objections offered,
were married at Paisley the 31st Oct 1834, by the Rev James Banks, Minister.

This next census was a bit of a mess; in the occupation column he had put the birthplaces,
but he also put the bithplaces in the proper column.
So it was written twice, and instead of repeating this i've just put a line ------- This is why there are no occupations.

Oh my gosh Jack when will I ever get to the ironing basket  so much information, many thanks I will print it all out and go over it later today. I had put a message regarding deaths prior to 1853 and where to find them and Annette answered, she came up with the Marriage of Janet and allen Wright and a John Morton's death in 1833 but no way to prove that he is mine yet?? still working on that. Also that Janet and Allan had a daughter Helen in 1835 so the puzzle is coming together.
Jack a million thanks for the information from the 1861 census and all of your help.
:D
Cheers

Janet Anderson,Helen Wright/John Arnot

Post by kiwibird56 » Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:58 pm

Hi Folks , I hope Margaret and Jack still participate on this forum. I discovered your thread late last night and what a scoop it's been =D>
MY GreatUncle is John Arnot(t) who married Helen Wright the daughter of Janet Anderson.
MY Greatgrandfather is James Arnot who married Isabella Blackwood who was the grandaughter of Janet Anderson. I have the death cert of Isabellas mother Jane (Jean?) Blackwood which states that her mother was Janet Wright, formerly Morton, maiden name Anderson.
John and James had a sister Isabella Arnot also born Campsie.
Jack lists James Morton the son of Janet Anderson marrying an Isabella Arnot and I strongly suspect that she could be the sister of John and James. All these 3 siblings have a daughter which they call Agnes Gilchrist - their mothers name is Agnes McGilchrist so it seems reasonable to make the connection for Isabella with John and James. :?:
MY Grandfather James Blackwood Arnott came out to NZ in 1900.
Would love to hear from anyone connected to these families. When time permits I will start a new thread re this Arnot(t) family
Cheers

Hello Jack
Just glancing through my post and see I haven't answered you reply, so so sorry about that. Yes my John Morton was a carter. I haven't done much in the way of family tree lately but just this past month have had a couple of new leads so looks like I have opened up that chest of searching and searching once again
cheers
