1862 Birth Records
Hi!! I just stumbled upon this amazing forum. I’ve been searching Scotlandspeople with no luck. I’m looking for a birth record (or ANY record) for Sarah McConnell or Connell born 1862 in Galloway, father’s name Timothy. Unfortunately, this is all the info I have & it is from her death record in the US, so the accuracy could be in question. I’m wondering if in 1862 everyone’s birth was recorded or if many were not? She left Scotland in 1880 or 1881. Family lore is that she was the maid in the Kerr family home & fell in love with Andrew Kerr so they ran off to the US together. I find them in the US in 1882, but no trace of before then. Thanks for any Info/advice you may have!!!

The 1862 births should be as complete a set of records as any other post-1855.
On looking at the 1871 and 1881 censuses, the nearest I can find is Sarah-Jane MacConnell. In each of these censuses she was in Hoddam Parish, Dumfries-shire. That leads to her birth record showing a birth in November 1859 in Ecclefechan, in Hoddam Parish. She was born to John MacConnell, a merchant and Jane MacConnell, m.s. Weild.
If you think this could be her, the next thing to do would be to see if she shows up on a marriage or death record in Scotland or in the next censuses. If she was still in Scotland in later years, then that would at least allow you to exclude her from your searches as you have sight of her in the US from the 1880s.
