Mary Jack, Lochlee - English And Scottish Popular Ballads

Post by caljam371 » Sat Apr 05, 2008 7:27 pm

While doing an online search (it's amazing what pops up) for my 4th Great Grandmother, Mary Jack, I came across this....

The English And Scottish Popular Ballads: Part I, V4 by Francis James Child
See all pages with references to "south countrie".
Excerpt - on Page 197: " ... plough o land, Aye, twenty plough and three, And he 's taen awa the bonniest lass Was in a' the south countrie. F Gibb MS., p. 9. "From recitation; traced to Mary Jack, Lochlee, Forfarshire, died 1881, aged 94." 1 BONNY MAY ... "

Does anyone have this book??

Amazon says I can look at a page of the book if I have previously bought from them - but I haven't.

The location and dates fit (and the name Gibb fits too). It's frustrating when you find wee snippets but can't get the whole picture! :(

My Mary Jack married John Gibb and had a son James b. 1815. :D

Hi Caljam
"From recitation; traced to Mary Jack, Lochlee, Forfarshire, died 1881, aged 94." 1 BONNY MAY ... "
Just a thought - Lochee is now part of Dundee, though was at one time a separate area - I wonder if that is the placename? There may well be a Lochlee in "Forfarshire" now Angus, but I don't know of it. (...but I should add that given my lack of geographical knowledge sometimes, the fact that I've not heard of it is not to be taken as an indication it does not exist!! )

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Caljam & Lealey,

Lochlee was a large rural parish in the north of Angus (Forfarshire).

Hover your mouse over the large parish in the top centre of the county map - the name should appear.

Lochlee is only 20 miles from me and I've never been there!!!

Next fine day I'll grab a picnick and go and visit - there's a museum there that looks well worth a visit!
