Togneri Family

Post by HeWhoDrinksGuinness » Wed Sep 18, 2019 2:14 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding the Togneri family who were/are based in Stirling? I have recently discovered that my Great Grandfather was Aldo Togneri who was from Stirling and I know very little about the family as there doesn't seem to be much information online.

Thanks :)

Hello Andy,

You’ll find various records for the Stirling branch of the Togneri family (including valuation rolls) on the ScotlandsPeople web site.

There’s an article in The Evening Telegraph and Post (Dundee), Monday, October 18, 1937, which reads in part:
"A Stirling miner who terrorised a 16-year-old girl shop assistant by threatening to wreck the premises was charged at Stirling Burgh Court to-day with conducting himself in a disorderly manner in a fish an chip restaurant in Baker Street occupied by Pietro Togneri."

The 1913-14 Stirling Directory has Pietro as a ice cream vendor at 116 Baker Street.

There’s a bit of a family history here.

Hope this helps,

A nice unusual name to search for - though beware of mis-spellings and mis-transcriptions.

I popped Togneri in the front page search of Scotland's People, and came up with a couple of hundred Births and Marriages a clutch of deaths and lots of hits on the valuation rolls and census returns.

Looking just at the indexes of all those, shows there were a few TOGNERI families in Scotland from 1891 onwards - perhaps related or not. Dumbarton, Ayrshire, East Lothian, and as you say, Stirling.

There were none showing initially for Stirling in 1911, they were there in 1901 - but a fuzzy match search found them under SIGNERI.
Aldo Signeri aged 2 in Stirling with parents Pietro 37, Eliza 30 and siblings Witana who was 7 and Alberts aged 4. [but I think those spellings can be taken with a pinch of salt, probably Elita, Vittoria and Alberto]

Lots of material there for you to enjoy.
Wilma

There are also many Togneri references in the Stirling Observer available here. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co. ... 2bobserver
