Kelly family in Anderston and Govan, Glasgow.....

Post by AnneMT » Tue Jul 18, 2006 4:52 pm

:D Michael Kelly married Unity Brogan,(born abt 1828), one of g g great aunts. They may have married in Ireland, abt 1850. Only child of this family, discovered, so far, is John born abt 1853-1855 in Glasgow.

John married twice. First wife was Ann McKivor(or McIvor)whose parents were James McKiver and Ann King. During this marriage, they had
Ann(dob 1876), Michael, (1882), Andrew, (1888), William (1891) and Mary(1896). Could be other siblings. John married second wife Margaret Rusk, or Reddy, abt 1905. Her parents were Austin Reddy/Mary Kelly. John died in Govan in 1922.

Ann (Annie) born abt 1876,married William Robertson in 1901 and had at least one son named Andrew.

Andrew born (1888) married Elizabeth Carroll n 1913 and had at least one child, daughter Elizabeth. Eliz's parents were Thomas Carroll and Jane Ruddy. Andrew died in 1943 in Wanlock St., Glasgow.

Does any of this info mean anything to anyone out there?? Hope someone can connect.

That was a quick response. I was not hopeful of any response. This is the same family. I do have the marriage details for John's second marriage. Were the witnesses, mentioned on the marriage cert. connected to your family, or maybe just friends?

I accidentally discovered Unity Brogan (John Kelly's mother), when I was browsing Brogan deaths at Park Circus, Glasgow. Assume she married Michael Kelly in Ireland. Have not traced marr. cert. I thought my great grandfather only had 3 brothers, though someone mentioned a few years ago, that there was also another sister,(not Unity), but did not back up her info. I still have a lot of research to do, for this branch of family, but any info you have would be appreciated. I have a lot of info about the Brogans.

Hi there, I had a note of a famiy, which could have been John Kelly's in 1881 census. Address was at 18/10 Whitehall St., Barony. Family comp. included John aged 3, James aged 7 mths. Have not checked out, as yet. but looks like they may have died young, as not on later census. There was also a sister-in-law and couple of boarders.

Can you tell me where you saw this record? I have been unable to find this family on Scotlandspeople. I found a Rosa Kelly, Unity Kelly and a few Michael Kelly's on 1851 census, but not same family.

The record you mention has got to be the same family, as Andrew Brogan, lodger, 15, puddler etc, could be her youngest brother. This would indicate that they arrived in Scotland earlier than we thought.

Would appreciate any help in finding this census info.

Hi Anne,
I firstly searched the useful 1851 Glasgow census name index on CD issued by the GWSFHS.
Then, after taking note of the number, looked it up on the film roll at The Mitchell Library, Glasgow.
This 1851 Glasgow index has only one Unity KELLY - the above 29yr old.
Is this the info you need?
Jack
ps, just curious! where were the family in 1861?
