Hi Sheila

Have you tried *o*ie as your search. It aught to bring up several possibles with the leading wildcard.

Most frustrating whern you have the actual image to work from.

Hi All,

I am not laughing, at this point I will take anything.
I get too many returns when I put in *o*ie.
It is a shame that it wasn't Dobbie, that would have fit in nicely, but I can't force square pegs into round holes, or is it the other way around. :)

I guess that I will have to let this one go for awhile.

Regards

Sheila

I'd defintutely read the capital letter of the Niece-in-Law informant's surname as "D" !!

And also the whole surname as "Daldie" but with a a degree of doubt over the last three (four??) letters, i.e. the "die" bit which certainly, I believe ends as "ie" .........

Just something I thought I should mention.

That emailed image has been reduced to around a quarter of it’s original size in the email process. (around one sixteenth in area size) The image in the gallery is 640 x 402 pixels 74kb whereas the original would have been around 2700 x 1600 and about the same in kb. (Let me know if there is a bigger image in the gallery because I can’t see it)

No amount of magnification or whatever will do anything to improve it’s readability.

You can get away with that level of reduction with things like photographs but usually not with anything else. (But for viewing only - a 640 x 402 photograph is the equivalent of one taken by a ONE QUARTER megapixel camera.)

There are many ways to send images by email, what Sheila possibly did in this case was to select the photo then clicked “email this file” in the list of tasks on the left of the screen (assuming she’s using Windows).

A box will then appear which gives the option of making the picture smaller or keeping the original size. For SP images, which have small file sizes to begin with, select the original size option.

Why not try the process again and you’ll see the difference.

(The original size option may not always be appropriate for other document type images having large file sizes unless they are cropped back to the bare essentials, the cropped version “saved as” under another name, (thereby not changing the original) and this cropped version sent as the attachment.)

Hello Bervonian,

They’re probably all duds, but seriously, that’s interesting, because your Doddie and a clutch of Duddys, Duddies, Doodys & Doddys are from Dundee in Angus.

In a previous post I wrote

Edinburgh Gazette, 24 Jan, 1905 – notice of a creditors meeting regarding the estate of a Mr Robertson, Farmer and Grazier, Brewlands, Coldrach, and Doldie, Glenisla..

“Brewlands, Coldrach, and Doldie, Glenisla” are, I think, in Angus but not sure precisely where, but the above names D names and the Doldie name might all be connected and associated with the place Doldie.

Might be worth checking your names on the free search on SP to see if any of those surnames are in the database.

I should have said that I went back and looked at the original TIFF image on ScotlandsPeople.

I know the majority are probably right about the D but just in case ...........

It would be great to see the magnified image from SP but I see the first letter as a T or F from the image in the gallery. I wondered about Follie.

Only one in 1881 but I can't find a marriage to clarify this woman's surname.

Hi Alan,
The reason for all the duds mentioned is because I recalled that one of the soldiers in the unit I was stationed at had the name. We used to tease him by singing, "My heart belongs to Duddie"
