Caljam :D :D :D

Thanks so much for the site information. I can now find 7 Castle Square and 3 Castle Street. I have written the Aberdeenshire Council to see if they can tell me if 3 Castle Street is the same as 3 Smith Court, Castle Street. I really enjoyed going through this site, it sure helped me a lot.

Some pics of Castle Street and Square - feel free to copy them!

Castle Street. No. 3 is the cream coloured one second from the right - It was a lovely morning in Stoney today, sunny but cold.

Castle Square as it is now - not the best pic but the sun was in the wrong place.

What a nice surprise..... :o :o

Thanks so much for the pictures, I am thrilled to death. They printed out beautiful and are in my book now. Also sent site to my niece in California so she can see where her grandfather and great grandparents lived.

Someday I hope to be able to walk these streets as my dad did.

Thanks so much for the info, this looks like it might have been when my dad was there. I have found a cousin in southern England that took a trip to Stonehaven for a week and took many pictures and forwarded them to me. She said it looks just like it might have been when my dad was living there, looks very dismal. She also took many pictures of the Harbour. Can hardly wait until the day comes that I can walk those streets also.

Thanks again, Marva

Hi Marva,
My name is Richard and I already sent you a PM. However , just in case you don't get to check your e-mail . I wanted to say "hello" and ask you if your dad was Charles William Leiper? Your grandma would be Ann Robertson? If so, then we are cousins. Ann was grand-daughter of my great x 3 grandparents, Charles Robertson (1809-1893) and Ann Falconer (1806-1893). They were parents of six sons, one was John Robertson, a Chelsea Pensioner, who married Helen Gaiter...and Charles Jr. who was my great great granddad, he married Elizabeth Fullerton. They were all from Stonehaven and Laurencekirk. I have been searching for family for ages, and was really excited to finally find someone else from my line. I think. I would enjoy hearing from you and hope that you are well. Thank you and best wishes.
Richard Robertson

Hello Richard,

I hope Marva gets your message.

The Google Maps camera car has been to Stonehaven but this is about as close as it got to Castle Street http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... 42.31,,0,5

Castle Street was mentioned a few times in the Dundee Courier:
January 09, 1866 - report about a murder for which an Andrew Brown from Castle Street, Stonehaven, was charged.
September 01, 1881 - An Elizabeth Ward, or Ramsay, fishgutter, was fined 5s. for a breach of the peace in Mrs Leiper’s dwellinghouse in Castle Street, Stonehaven.
January 05, 1885 - John Adam, a seaman, from Castle Street, Stonehaven, who held a certificate for the sale of table beer, was charged with a breach of the liquor laws.

Hope that’s interesting,
Alan

Hi everyone!
Does anybody know I may be able to get in touch with Marva? I feel that we are cousins, but I would like to hear from her to be sure. Does anyone know Market Street well in Stoney? That's where my Robertson family lived. Thanks folks and have a great weekend! Happy Father's Day to you dads!

Cheers!
Richard

I know the area quite well but not sure I could be of much help regarding it's history. I found this doing a quick search on bing for "castle street" stonehaven.

http://hsewsf.sedsh.gov.uk/hslive/hsstart?P_HBNUM=41609
"Notes:
Castle Street was formerly the main road out of Stonehaven leading to Dunnottar Castle. The few remaining houses lining the east side (all those to the west have gone) of what would have been a major thoroughfare are rare survivors of a once prolific type."

The area has had a bit of a tough time lately -

Let me know if I can be of any more help.
