John appears to have come as well. The 1871 census on Ancestry is only an index of the heads of households. I had already looked for Hay & Ann, with no luck, but this looks like Hay's brother John:

Ontario, Canada Census Index, 1871
Name:John King
Age:37
Estimated birth year:abt 1834
Gender:Male
Birth Place:Scotland
Residence District:Ontario South
Residence Location:Pickering
Ethnic Origin:Scottish
Religion:Church of Scotland / Kirk / Scotch Presbyterian, etc.
Occupation:Farm Labourer
Division:4
Microfilm Roll:C-9973
Page:18
Head of Household Comment:This person is listed as a head of household.

They were possibly all there in the same household. I can't find John's death though, but he was there in 1881, perhaps... married to Margaret.

And also in 1901, with Margaret... and in 1911. I take back what I said about there being no descendants there! Given the number of children he had, I'm sure you have cousins all over the place in Ontario!
His wife Margaret was a widow at her death in 1918... so why can't I find John's death? He may have died outside Ontario, or be hopelessly mis-indexed, or I need another cup of coffee
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

I think you deserve a nice pat on the back for your efforts.

Hay King from Nigg must surely be a name made in Genealogy Heaven but despite that almost all of the Hay I managed to find was Fodder.

All the best,
Alan

 I found the same  But it is a problem that the initial letter is the one usually mistranscribed... Ancestry won't allow searching with an initial wildcard like *ay

John's wife appears to be Margaret Barclay. They were married 3 Mar 1853 in Old Deer, Aberdeenshire

Here are the marriages I have been able to find for John's children:
Alexander married Emma Angus 8 Oct 1884
Annie married Wm Thos Bushby 31 Aug 1885
Ellen "Nellie" married Robert Defoe 16 Mar 1892
I'll bet "Tenie" King who married Dugald McDonald 20 Mar 1888 was Christina

If you want to continue down this road, I'm sure we could dig up some children for these couples... I hope you don't mind going off on a long Canadian tangent :D Perhaps I'd better get back to Scotland to your direct ancestors...

All the best,
Sarah
