Wel, maybe not just so straightforward, as the sister of William and Joseph, Ann Smith MacFADYEN died age 4, so that there won't be any descendants from this line in Scotland, unless, of course, William or Joseph, or descendants returned at some point to Scotland.
Their father Joseph remarried Jane CALDWELL in 1878.
But all is not lost as Joseph, b. ca. 1841 had at least 3 siblings, Elisabeth, agnes and Mary Ann ............

Hi my name is Thomas and I was curious about your McFadden line. I as well as my family have researching my great grandfather Joseph Edward Town. his past is a big mystery for us. the only census records i have for him show him emigrating from england to Danver, Massachusetts around 1889 and his marriage to Effie flye in 1891 they had 9 children all have since passed away which makes the research harder. the story is he was adopted by the town family i believe at birth 1865 to 1870. Benjamin and Margaret town were very wealthy. his real name was Joseph Edward / Edwin McFadden born in Edinburgh Scotland. there are no records i can find without going to Scotland and doing more research. after his wife passed away in 1911 he became depressed and left custody of his children to her parents and supposedly went back to either england or Edinburgh. i believe he passed away around 1945 because that was the last his kids heard from him. the last name is fuzzy because there are no records for this adoption (that i could find) so i spelled it the way it was pronounced. just curious if there is connection thanks

Hi Thomas and a warm welcome to Talking Scot!
There is an Edward Mcfadyen born 1866 in Edinburgh City on ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk. Have you checked that one out? It looks like this one on familysearch.org IGI:
Edward Mc Fadyen
Birth: 17 Jan 1866 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Father: Alexander Mc Fadyen
Mother: Margaret Barron
Not sure how you'd know if he was "yours" except by trying to trace this one forward in time. Have you been able to find him in a census before he came to the U.S.? He should be findable in 1871 and 1881 either in Scotland or England and his birth place should be indicated. There is a great deal of searching you can do without going to Scotland!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
That Edward is safe and well with his family in 1881.
It's the Benjamin Town that's getting me - you think he'd be fairly easy to find.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Ah, well... it was a try. I'm still waiting for Ancestry to give me a good deal before I subscribe again, but they don't seem to feel it is necessary!
Regards,
Sarah

Hi sarah. thanks for the reply. unfortunately there are no records other than the census for his migration to the u.s. the last census shows him in danver massachusetts in 1911. I only know that his wife passed away in 1912 and he left the country going back to either england or edinburgh. his death I,m assuming was around 1945 because he sent a letter to his kids at this time (the letter was never opened and destroyed shame...)there are stories in the family that he changed his name upon entering the u.s. which would explain the lapse in records. his surename is the mystery I understood it to be mcfadden but dont know when it was changed to town/towne. his adoptive parents were supposedly benjamin and margaret town. he was a handfull for them so they sent him to the u.s. to live with relatives. I guess he will always remain a mystery. thanks for your help thomas
