Back again Kari,
If you go to the Forum thread viewtopic.php?t=11449 click on the link and when you get to the “Gale Digital Collections” page put in the email, login and password shown under the link you clicked on. They’re slightly out of order there so make sure you enter them in the right order. You don’t need to register yourself.
You should then see a long list of databases. About halfway down there’s one for “19th Century British library Newspapers”. Click on that and in the search box type GRANDHOLM COTTAGE and in No. 28 of the 35 results you’ll find the birth and the other one is No. 30.
Increase the page magnification from 33% to 50% or whatever so it’s easily read. Right click to save the image or download as a PDF whichever you prefer. You can also search individual publications and can also filter results by clicking on the people etc. links at the left.
Hope it works okay and you find plenty. If you have any difficulties let us know.
Alan

If I remember correctly there are plenty pedestrian lights along that road it's a residential area so no problems walking anywhere [ or taking a bus for that matter]. The only roads you can't walk on here are the Motorways - blue on maps with an M. Just remember we drive on the left here and you'll be fine.Kari G wrote:Hi Susan,
I do hope I can find a cottage, if not the cottage. I am planning to stay at the Larches hotel on Queen street. Do you think I can walk across the bridge I see on the map? Is it easy to cross the A96 as a pedestrian? If not, do you know of another place to stay that is easier access for walking? Thanks again for all your help.
If you go to www.multimap.com and search for AB24 4EG that'll give you the location of the hotel. Then click 'bird's eye' and an area and you'll be able to see exactly where you are going.
Have a good trip!

Off to your fair Island
We are off to London and then up to Aberdeen on August 6th. I'll post how the trip goes and the outcome. Thanks to you all for your assistance!

Catching Up
I have wanted to get back on since our trip in August 2008 and let everyone know that I had a wonderful time in Scotland and Aberdeen. But I forgot my id!!?!
Unfortunately, Grandholm Cottage is no longer there, as some of you suspected. We did tour the area and came across the old Ice House which appears to have backed on to the farm land around the house. We also met some wonderful ladies at the family history centre and also the library. We were able to find some interesting information on my great grandfather in a book on the Crombie Mills.
I need to go back and spend a good three weeks in Aberdeen - hope to do so next year.
Thanks to everyone.

Hi
Parts of Aberdeen are now on Google street maps. This is a link to 12 Queen St (? your hotel), you can follow the route to the area where Grandholm Cottage used to be.
