Hi Carol,
Glad to have that confirmed! :D It's a puzzle though, that William's death doesn't seem to show up anywhere (the only one I can find of the right age died in Glasgow City, which doesn't seem right). I suspect if one can find William and Isabella in 1861, that will point to his place of death. But again, nothing obvious. I was trying to think of where he might go, as a shepherd... Lots of Basque shepherds came to California about that time. But no sign of William. Could he and Isabella have tried to make a go in Australia, leaving the children behind with relatives, then he died and she came back? Wild guesses here

Regards,
Sarah

Good Morning
Well you have all been busy :) on Williams (1852) marriage cert 1884 his father is not recorded as deceased but the fact that the family were split up by 1861 suggested that William or Isabella had died but at the moment I have no record of his death. They could have gone overseas between 1857 and 1861 William died then Isabella and kids came back, I have had the same thing with another family.

You've given me lots to get busy with (time to spend some dosh on SP)

Thanks Again

Hi Smid,

Mary's marriage certificate shows William as deceased in 1876, but where is still a mystery.

Sarah,

One thing that has surprised my sister and I over and over again is how much some of these people moved around given what transportation was like in the 1800's. Our great aunt Jessie apparently went down to the dock, bought a ticket and sailed off to the US--five times! Another made the trip over when she was eight months pregnant. Go to Austrailia or China, sure, why not! The lesson for us is expect anything when you're looking for your relatives!

Hi Carol
Another made the trip over when she was eight months pregnant.
Does not ever bear thinking about. No way would I have done that, ...even if offered a luxury cruise!!!

In a similar vein, I have one lady who left Scotland for Canada in 1889, aged 82 (!) Again, not what you'd expect.... (took me a while to find that one, as I was convinced she'd not be moving anywhere and MUST have died in Scotland!!)

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
My great aunt took her long anticipated trip to Scotland from the U.S. when she was in her 80's. She lived to be 96, so she still had plenty of time to go over her memories after she got back!

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Smid,

Do you know if Isabella Bowman Dunn had any sisters? If she did and one of them married a Neish, then this could be Isabella living and working with their family in 1861 and either using their name or being given that by mistake on the census takers part?
