Hi Sandal1
Got ya!. What may be the reason for the children only being recorded as male/female is that they may not have been given a name, as they may have been premature/stillborn.
I had a look at those births and I believe that my above is the reason they dont have names as they are all extracts and not LDS submissions.
I have some of those in my own records

Hi Stewie - I hadn't thought of that. What is the significance of them being extracts not LDS submissions. I have to admit that I don't know what LDS subs are - I'm a bit new to all of this.
Thanks Heaps

Hi Sandal
Extracts are copies (copied) from the original records, either registry office or Old Parish records. LDS submissions are those on the LDS site that have been entered by members of the church as part of their beliefs.
This may mean that the records may not be accurate, however, in their defence they just may be as they had access to other sources. Unfortunately though some are just wild guesses that fit what they want it to fit.
Being a bit new, well you've come the the best forum to help you become one of those that helps others

Re: re Greig family
sandal1 wrote:Thanks again Anne H and Annette. Fantastic to get their address from the census. I am guessing that it would be in Newmachar? and is St Nicholas the parish that encompasses the Newmachar area or just where the birth was registered.
Re the children listed as born to George Greig and Mary Milne - do you think they are all to this Mary and George as the 1851 birth of Mary is before the 1857 date that I have listed for their marriage. Is it possible to find the names of the children that are listed just as male and female? If they are all of the same family I wonder if I can find out if they all came to Australia - I know for sure that James Milne Greig came with his parents and brother George Fraser Greig who is shown on this index as George Milne Greig? which is all a bit confusing. I also have a different birth date for George Fraser Greig -- 26.8.1857. Thanks again for all your help.
As Stewie said the un-named children probably died shortly after birth. There are 2 births indexed at SP at Keithhall in 1856 and 2 deaths the same year of a male and female born in 1856.
I too noticed Mary's birth was years before they married so ........either she was born to another George Greig and Mary Milne or she died before the 1861 census. There is a death registered at St Vigeans in 1857 of a Mary Greig of the correct age.
So in my opinion the only children who survived till 1861 are George and James.
You do know you can view these records at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
Where did you get the birth date of George as 26.8.1857?
Regards,
Annette

thanks so much for your info Annette re death records. I must admit I haven't fully explore the records at scotlands people site yet - I did cruise but not fully. Is there a charge for all records? Re: George Fraser Greig's birthdate - I know I originally got his birth year from my G'mas birth certificate of 1883 which showed him as the father aged 26yrs. hence the 1857. This would have been back in 2000 when I first started researching, and probably got the day and mth from an internet site back then but I can't really remember where. The computer I was using back then died and all my bookmarked sites with it. I have only started again recently after a big break. I did have a note in my files showing 14.6.1857 also as another date I had found somewhere. All a bit confusing. I will keep trying to sort it out. I know James Milne Greig shown on the list is definately his brother as I have an old newspaper cutting from my mum's records where he turned 100yrs on 28 Aug 1958 so that all fits. thanks again.

Scotlands People is a pay per view site but, in my opinion, great value for money. £6 will get you 30 credits which is equal to 5 bmd entries if you have enough info to get it right first time. There is also a wee freebie of 10 credits at http://www.ancestralscotland.com/
So for £6 you could get Mary Milne and George Greig's marriage (which should confirm their parents' names), your g grandfather's birth entry and still have enough left for another 4.
Regards,
Annette

Hello All,
The Ship Conway had these Greig’s on board when it arrived in Queensland in 1862, according to the lists available here http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research ... ration.asp
GREIG George 31 - Conway 27 Nov 1862
GREIG Mary 31 - Conway 27 Nov 1862
GREIG William 4 - Conway 27 Nov 1862
GREIG Alexander 3 - Conway 27 Nov 1862
GREIG George 1 - Conway 27 Nov 1862
These match a list published in the Brisbane Courier 4 November 1862 http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/artic ... eig+conway
There’s a report of the voyage here http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/artic ... +conway%22
These are the Queensland births and deaths after their arrival according to Queensland BDM. https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/BirIndexQry.m
Births
1863/C516 Greig Alexander - George Mary Milne
1865/C863 Greig John Royan - George Mary Milne
1867/C1276 Greig Robert - George Mary Mill
1870/C1167 Greig Martha - George Mary Milne
1872/B15004 Greig Elizabeth - George Mary Milne
Deaths
1867/C470 Greig Robert - George Greig Mary Milne
1905/C2140 Greig Elizabeth - George Greig Mary Milne
1911/C1898 Greig William Berry - George Greig Mary Milne
I can’t see a Queensland death for an Alexander Greig that may have been replaced by the one born 1863. The newspaper reported two births on board but no deaths.
The situation regarding children’s names and ages looks a bit confusing. I haven’t delved into that or naming patterns or how the names Berry and Royan blend in.
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hi Alan,
It appears to me that the family on board the Conway is not Sandal1's
unless they have William and George's ages mixed up - but that doesn't explan who Alex is - or is it meant to be James???
The bmd's look ok.
Regards,
Annette
