Hello Robert,
As usual I’ve been fossicking through newspapers. There’s a notice in the Glasgow Herald, 19th April, 1898.
“The relatives of the deceased P. C. Paton beg to thank the shopkeepers and others in the Cowcaddens district for the magnificent tribute which they have given in memory of the deceased.”
Thought I'd let you know in case it’s to do with the policeman and you don’t have a copy.
Alan

Hi Robert,
There is a William Paton, age 48, possibly a weaver, who sailed from Greenock to New York on the ship Wacousta arriving 17 July 1852. Yes, I know, that doesn't prevent him from being in the 1851 census in Scotland
But it might prevent him from being present at his son's wedding. The reason I say "possibly" a weaver is that there is nothing written in the occupation box, but if I squint there might just be a ditto mark... and the next one written above is "weaver"
Regards,
Sarah

Wow thanks guys I'm overwelmed. The news article would definitley be him as his death certificate has residence 205 CowCaddens. Thanks for that Alan, it really starts to bring the name alive rather than just a set of dates & places. What paper was it & how do you get access?
Sarah, thanks. I have a suspicion Janet died soon after 1841 and I've just found in IGI a set of births in Bevie ... whatever, Angus (where they were in 1841) to a William Paton & Elspeth Keir between 1846 and 1854, so I am investigating whether he remarried (quite soon it appears!)

Hello Robert,
That’s from “19th Century British Library Newspapers” currently available online along with heaps of other databases free to all residents of NSW and separately to all residents of Australia from the following:
State Library of NSW
http://www2.sl.nsw.gov.au/databases/athome.cfm
National Library of Australia
http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/list/licenced
Sign up online for both of them and they’ll post you a reader’s ticket.
I couldn’t easily see anything else but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something else there. That’s the Glasgow Herald, 19th April, 1898, a search for Paton will find it.
Great stuff,
Alan

Hello again everyone! So, I am back with my brick wall
. Not wanting to be a burden, I have been away trying to give it a really good go - trying to track the children through later census's & the marriages of John & Margaret to see if I could get an upper limit on William's death. But alas, I am still not able to make progress.
So where am I up to? I did not find much on the possible second marriage to Elspeth Keir investigation which I referred to above - not putting much stock in that now. So here is a summary of what I know so far:
18/11/1828 - William Patton married to Janet McInroy in Auchtergaven , Perthshire - both 'in' this parish
27/8/1828 - Son William baptised in Auchtergaven - William living in 'Gibes Town'
28/8/1830 - Son John baptised in Auchtergaven - family living at 'Gibiston'. (Janet not mentioned in this record)
25/4/1833 Daugther Margaret baptised in Auchtergaven - family living at 'Gibbeston'
6/5/1837 - Daughter Helen born in Dundee City / Angus
15/5/1839 - Dau Mary Martin born in Dundee City / Angus - William Paton, Weaver, Janet McInroy
19/2/1841 - Dau Barbet born in Dundee City / Angus - William Paton, Weaver, Janet McInroy
C1841 - Family living in Liff & Benvie Angus, William & Janet age 35-39 (so DOB abt 1802-1806) - not born in county of Angus - Born nearby, assume Perth. Children William 12, John 10, Margt 7, Barbet 5m. (No mention of Helen or Mary Martin)
C1851 - Cannot find Wiliam, Janet, Helen, Mary or Barbet!
C1851 - William - Servant in Pitcairngreen, Unmarried age 21 (b. abt 1830), Farm Lab. born Methven in household of Samuel Roy & family.
C1851 - John - Lodger in Dundee Angus, age 21, at Idvies St, Joint Stock Buildings, occupation Packer, with Euphenia Clark 29 & Anne Clark 1. Born Auchtergaven abt 1830.
C1851 - Margaret - servant in Dundee - age 18 (DOB 1833) born 'Perth, Perths' - at 177 Hawkhill Ns with Andrew Paterson and family
14/8/1857 - Marriage at Pitcairngreen of William Patton to Jane Bisset - William living at Loneleven, Parish of Methven - Parents William Patton Ag Lab & Janet Patton MS McInroy (deceased) - would this mean both of them or just Janet?
C1861 - John - Several possibilities - no clear candidate
C1861 - Margaret - Several possibilities - no clear candidate
Its interesting that the family (apart form the older siblings William, John & Margaret) really starts to disappear after the 1841 Census.
Helen & Mary Martin were not even mentioned in 1841 - I assume they had died young or were with other relatives - but have not been able to find them in 1841 anyway.
Then I can't find William, Janet or Barbet in 1851. I am now wondering whether William died before 1851 too - or is he the one on the Wacousta?
I checked all the new burial records at SP in Angus & Perth for the deaths of William, Janet, Helen, Mary, & Barbet variously after 1837 or the 1841 census but found nothing - I guess these records are a bit sketchy as they say at SP.
So it may just be a case of bad luck - that they all died before 1851 census and/or 1855 statutary records starting & I am just not going to find much on their births. So looking at the births & parents possibilities for William & Janet, I narrowed Janet's birth down from 3 possibilities (based on age in 1841 - see above) to 1800, parents John McInroy & Margaret Forbes in Baladmond near Guay or Dunkeld. Note this follows the Scottish naming pattern - second son & first daughter. If this is the case it suggests William's parents could be William & Helen (1st son & second daughter). However, I have not been able to find such a pair anywhere. (I did find a William & Helen Bayne in Auchtergaven Perth with children William 1773, Peter 1780 & John 1775, - but that looks like a generation earlier). Perhaps William & Janet only partially followed the naming pattern - in any case I think it looks likely William's father was also named William.
So I have a few questions:
- Is it likely that the 1857 Marriage cert of William & Jane Bisset - the reference to 'deceased' applies to both Janet & William?
- Son, William was born in Auchtergaven in 1828 but in several census's it gives a birthpalce as Methven. Could I have the wrong william?
- any strategies for finding Margaret or John's marriages - there are a lot of them!
- What should I do next?
Apologies for the long post, but any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks
Robert

Hi folks. I am a happy man today
- I finally broke down this brick wall
and was able to establish who William Paton's parents were. I was getting despondent trying to find the marriages of his children Margaret or John to see when he was deceased and I read one of the other posts here which had such great advice about not giving up & looking sideways along siblings or down through the censuses & so I thought I would give it one more go. I noticed that Cecilia the daughter of his son William (b1828) was missing from home age 12 in the 1871 Census. A look through Ancestry found here as Cecelie Potton in Glasgow with her aunt Margaret Strangeways - who was of course the Margaret Patton I was looking for. Her marriage in 1862 said William was still living so I looked through the 1861 & 1871 censuses again & it looked like he was probably deceased by 1871. Then zooming in on deaths between 1862 and 1871 in Perth, I found him after the 4th try in Rattray in 1868. This gave his parents & was witnessed by his Son William, once again in Gibbestown Methven. So it wasn't really a brick wall after all was it?
Anyway, good hunting everyone. Thanks to everyone for all the good advice.
Robert
