Charles Stewart born Paisley Cawsewayside (sic)
Widower age 40, occupation Bill Carrier, Prot

Children - Cecilia, 10 years, born 73 King Street.
James, 6 years, born 73 King Street

Pauper is the son of Charles Stewart and Elizabeth Renfrew both deceased.
and all i have for Charles Sen is he was a Carter , doesnt help a lot does it,
odd when you see this , he makes out Agnes Mcpherson is the Mother of the Children , yet calls himself a widower ,
as they say if your going to lie , you have to be good at it .

It's really important to establish who the parents were.

What was the father's occupation on Charles' death cert?

Where and when did Charles marry.

There is a Marriage of a Charles to an Agnes Beggs producing children, some with IDENTICAL names to Charles' siblings:

1. PETER STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 JUN 1864 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

2. CHARLES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 JAN 1862 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

3. CHARLES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 JUL 1868 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

4. AGNES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 02 FEB 1860 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

5. ROBERT STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 05 JUL 1866 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

6. MARY GARDNER STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 16 MAY 1873 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

7. HARRIET FRANCES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 13 FEB 1858 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

8. ELIZABETH STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 APR 1856 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

9. JOHN GILCHRIST STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 29 JAN 1871 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

If you are positive that this is your Charles and Agnes, I'll eat my hat if his parents weren't Charles and Elizabeth Patrick!

Harriet Frances and John Gilchrist CAN'T be a coincidence.

sorry i am clueless , unless we have a family of stewarts , that maybe name the first son Charles , and the 2 are cousins , and maybe why we are getting some of the same names come up.
maybe my Charles was only born in Causewayside and didnt really live there , as i remember hearing a lot of woman went to the Parents house when having the children , so maybe just reg in Paisely , its a hard one ,
i only have as the Father of Charles as a Carter , nothing else and Elizabeth Renfrew , no marriage date - son Charles didnt marry , or not that we know of unless he was married to someone else before he lived with Eliz Cameron , him being 10 year older , he might well have been a wi  dower , as he seems to have got over his woman quick enough ,
i would think Eliz Patrick more likely to be the one ,

re this Charles and Agnes Begg one , i have Charles living at King street Glasgow in 1864 , on daughter Frances birth Cert , and Son James born 1867 , the Father reg Frances so shes coming out as Stewart , now odd , he did give a Marriage date on her Birth cert , ahhhh he has down as being married 17th March 1861 in Glasgow , there is no such marriage ,
also when Eliz died shes down as Single , yet when Charles signs the death cert for Elizs Mother in 1871 he calls himself her son in law ,
on the census for King Street he calls Elizabeth a Boarder ? Lodger or similar , this is strange . maybe he had a few woman on the go at the same time lol , no we shouldnt laugh

Andy
Charles and Eizabeth Patrick , i cant see a birth for a Charles ?
and this Agnes Begg ,
wonder if at any stage shes been this Agnes McPherson , the woman who was with Charles in King Street , when the children got taken away ,
could see her taking on another 2 children of another womans , with a bunch herself ,
this could be why my Granda has been confused as to who his Mother was

andy
the more i look at the Charles and Agnes Begg , it cant be him , he would be too young to have a child in 1856 , also in LDS , this couple married in 1856 , unless his age is well out on the death cert

going by what we have found so far and Agnes Mcpherson being around , i expect anything would have went lol
if shes not going to own up to not being the Mother of 2 children , i expect she could mess up a Renfrew and Patrick , just wish this woman with the information on the Poor Relief would get back , it might help ,
even ever so slightly , shes not signed the death cert , so maybe guess work ,
and then neighbour who said they had lived there 10 years lol , think they must all have been up to something eh ,
Hi Jan,

Remember it was Charles himself who gave his parents info.

Here is your Charles.

1861 Census -

Name: Charles Stewart
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831

Where born: Paisley, Renfrewshire
Registration Number: 644/10
Registration district: Hutchesontown
Civil Parish: Glasgow Gorbals
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 10 Clyde Terrace B L
Occupation: Dealer

Here is Charles who is almost certainly the son of Charles Stewart and Elizabeth Patrick like Andy says (this can easily be checked by looking at his marriage entry to Agnes Beggs).

1861 Census

Name: Charles Stewart
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
