ooh lesley-yes I have come across that census report a few yrs ago when I was getting stuck into this research (then life sort of took over )

I actually visited th place and it is an old dairy farm then school house and now a pottery.`Was fascinating .But I have no proof that that is my Margaret. I don't know what became of her mother Mary.

I have Margaret's marriage and death cert ,details in earlier post.

Mary is elusive though.

Hi Pauline

Is Margaret's mother Mary stated as deceased on the 1896 marriage, or not?
Marrying at home was reasonably normal for the times. Folk also sometimes got married in village halls, hotels and the like.

Best wishes
Lesley

And on Margaret's birth entry does it give an occupation for Mary - I'm guessing it may have said "domestic servant" or similar, from what you have said.
No she is alive and well when Margaret got married.
And still Stewart, so not married herself?

Now this may be all wrong, but in the 1881 census, (using the CDROM disks) I went fishing just to see what there was...I searched for a Mary Stewart b.1850 +/- 5yrs (on the assumption she was quite young at the time of the birth) and made the assumption the one you are looking for was born in Ayrshire, on the basis that we know she was there at the time of the daughter's birth and if we are right with the dairy keeper being your Margaret's granny, she appears to be Ayrshire based too. There are a LOT of ifs in this, and I may be off on the wrong route entirely, but these two candidates turned up:

I know it is a long way round, but we've not that much to work on to identify your Mary at present. Next stage would be to find the births of these two Marys, (based on ages and places of birth) and establish if either of them have a mother called Margaret and if there is a dairy connection there etc. Puely based on age, I'd think the first one more likely.

I'm going to throw a real wild card out on the table and you can take this for whatever it's worth. Not sure this can ever be proven but here's where I'm stuck at....

Yes I agree with Lesley 100 percent that the census of Margaret Stewart with a granddaughter of correct age is looking very good to be your wee Margaret b. abt 1872 at Barns Terrace. So i've fleshed out the familly of Margaret Stewart. This is the potential grandmother I'm talking about here. Her parents were Hugh Stewart and Mary McCreath. Mary McCreath Stewart died of consumption in Straiton 9 Oct 1836 wife of Hugh Stewart. Hugh Stewart is on the 1841 and 1851 census with daughter Margaret...but so sign of a wee Mary yet and none with her in 1861, 1871 or 1881 either. When Margaret Stewart dies age 67 on 25th May 1887 in Girvan the informant is a sister, Mary Campbell. Mary Campbell dies 27 July 1901 in Barr age 79 and the informant is a daughter. Finding Mary Campbell mn Stewart on the 1861 census with her husband James there is the fantastic wildcard staring at us......a niece named Mary Cuthbertson b abt 1852 in Straiton is living with the Campbells. What are the odds this is really Mary Stewart mother of your Margaret and the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Stewart??? Haven't tried to prove this one yet....my brain is still birling from all the Stewarts I've tracked down..... It's not uncommon to find illegitmate children under the surnames of their supposed fathers until they become adults and then they can return to using the surnames of their mother. Of course Mary Cuthbertson could be a legimate niece of some other sister of Mary Campbell mn Stewart too.....this is the bit that needs lots more detective work.....

Best wishes
Jean

No further evidence to the Cuthbertson link I'm afraid This is good and bad!! It let's my theory stand for the moment that Mary Cuthbertson b. 1852 Straiton and Mary Stewart b. 1852 Straiton are the same person ....

If this is so then this is likely Mary in 1871:

Name: Mary Stewart
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Relationship: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Straiton, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 594
Registration district: Girvan
Civil parish: Girvan
Town: Girvan
County: Ayrshire
Address: Dalrymple St
Occupation: General Serv (domestic)
ED: 5
Household schedule number: 91
Line: 15
Roll: CSSCT1871_110
Household Members: Name Age
Matthew Brown 40
Jeannie Brown 40
Mary Stewart 19

And the entry that Lesley found of 1881 I'd guess might be the same gal based on birthplace....
