Hi everyone, I am actually trying to help a very good friend who has helped me a lot.
He doesn't have any certs. but his brickwall is finding John CRAIG's parents.
He knows about his ancestors when they went to Canada.

Really appreciate all the information you have given me...now if only we can find John's parents.

Thank you all very much,
Di

Has he tried to obtain John's death cert to see if his parents are listed?

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah, thank you for your suggestion re John's death cert.
How would I go about obtaining one from New Zealand do you know please.?
Don't think he has tried to obtain one as yet but will ask.

Much obliged

Hello Di,
If John could be found in the index at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, then you could request a copy... But I don't see his death! Elizabeth's is there, however. Hers should at least say if she was a widow or not at the time of her death... or maybe not. I have been looking over the Provincial Archives site to try to find out what information is on the death certificates.

http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default ... ture=en-CA

The County Death Registers give minimal information, from 1888-1920:

The register(s) contains numbered pages with columns headed: number, name of deceased and residence, when and where died, sex and age, occupation, religious denomination, certified cause of death and duration of illness, where born, name of physican if any, name, occupation and residence of informant, and when registered.

The Provincial Returns of Deaths sound more helpful, but it seems that if he died before 1888, it is hit or miss whether or not a record exists. Too bad, since:

These indexes include the name of the deceased, the date of death, the county where the death occurred, the registration number of the certificate, and the microfilm F-number whereon the certificate may be viewed.

The individual certificates themselves include more or less: the name, sex, and residence of the deceased, the date and place of death, the length of residence in the Province and County is given, racial origin, marital status, date of birth, place of birth, occupation, name of spouse, names and birthplaces of parents, name and address of informant, place and date of burial, cause of death, and duration of illness, depending on the form used and whether it was fully completed.

As a first step, you could try contacting the people who claim this ancestry on Genforum (unless, of course, that is you and your friend!) http://genforum.genealogy.com/craig/messages/5932.html

There is no obvious researcher at RAOGK.org to look up records in Nelson.

You have my sympathy in trying to go backwards from an ancestor who does not appear in any Scottish census  One of my 3rd great grandfathers died in Glasgow in 1840 and I'm still trying to find out who his parents were!

Best of luck,
Sarah

Which of course we knew anyway, since he appears in the censuses up through 1881. He seems to have died between 1881 and 1891, probably before 1888, which is why his death cert seems to be missing.

Did you try to contact any of the Craig researchers on Genforum who are descended from John?

Regards,
Sarah
