Exactly - and that's why I still hold out hope of discovering the details about the family that gave me my maiden name. Stewart, would you believe, but not in Scotland! I have to get the details from Antrim in Ireland

Guess I'll have to make a trip to Belfast

You have probably tried this, but, have you contacted the Stormont/Dundas/ Glengarry genealogy society. If William emigrated that early then he and his family would be pioneers, perhaps there may have been some other family member that has researched the family. Which county did he settle in, do you know.

Pattersons who emigrated to Canada 1820's

William settled first in Matilda Township located in Dundas County and then moved to Winchester Township (also Dundas Co.) around 1845-47.

I inquired a couple of years ago about the SD&G Genealogical Society but didn't have much success. I don't think the society (if it even still exists) is very active as they don't appear to advertise meeting times, events or available resources. Nevertheless, most of the really detailed records that local genealogists and resource centers have pertain to the settlement of United Empire Loyalists following the American revolution. This is about a decade or so too early for my William. :(

I'm still working on identifying settler groups that came to the County around 1815-1825 hoping to at least narrow the field of possibilities as to his origin in Scotland. I'm working on the assumption that if William had received assistance from one of the county emigration societies in Scotland then others in the group that arrived in Canada would likely originate in or around the same area. Alternatively, if he was traveling on his own means then perhaps he had friends from back home near where he settled in Dundas Co.
Does this sound reasonable :?: Any other suggestions/tips are most welcomed. :)

Hi Gerry:

I've pulled a list of books available at my local library. They are Reference books, so not available for loan, but i'd be willing to have a look through any that you may not have available at your library, or you have not yet checked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Cemetery transcriptions : Stormont County. v.1.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Lost names and places of Eastern Ontario : previous names of places and the names of abandoned places in the geographical counties of Carleton, Dundas, Frontenac, Glengarry, Grenville, Lanark, Leeds, Lennox and Addington, Prescott, Renfrew, Russell, Stormont : the counties of region VIII of the Ontario Genealogical Society
by Rayburn, Alan.
Ontario Genealogical Society, 1993.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Index to the 1871 census of Ontario : Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry-Prescott-Russell
Ontario Genealogical Society, 1987.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. The Kennedys-MacDiarmids, McDermids-Munros, and other Glengarry-Stormont pioneers
by Campbell, R. B. (Robert Bennett), 1928-
Mika, 1986.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. County marriage registers of Ontario, Canada, 1858-1869
Generation Press, 1981-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Illustrated historical atlas of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Counties, Ontario.
by Belden, (H.) & Co.
Mika Silk Screening, 1972.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Illustrated historical atlas of the counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry 1879 ; Prescott and Russell supplement of the illustrated atlas of the Dominion of Canada 1881
Richardson, Bond & Wright, 1972.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Lunenburgh, or, The old eastern district, its settlement and early progress. [microform] : with personal recollections of the town of Cornwall, from 1824 : to which are added a history of the King's royal regiment of New York and other corps, the names of all those who drew lands in the counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, up to November, 1786 and several other lists of interest to the descendants of the old settlers
by Pringle, J. F. (Jacob Farrand), 1816-1901.
Standard Print. House, 1890.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see an active genealogical society listed for Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry-Prescott-Russell in the list at http://www.islandnet.com/~cghl/cghlsearch.php

At www.ca.yahoo.com entering a search for Canada only results in many sites that may be of help on Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry-Prescott-Russell

Hope this is of some help,
Frances

Hi Frances,

Thank you for the great book titles and offer of extra help. It is very good of you to go to all this bother. :)

I have read some of the books that you listed and found them most helpful to my research. I'll check the others out upon my next library visit and then let you know if there is anything you can do to help. Thanks again
