Lesley,
Thanks for the info regarding 'journeyman'; I had thought the same as Claire! Every day is a school day.
Claire,
You can request military records from the army at the address below. There is a 'kinship' requirement and it costs £30. Details are at the link below.
Army Personnel Centre,

Thank you all for the wonderful replies, very helpful indeed, and like you say every day is a school day.... I have checked the Sarah Herbert entry out, and no POB is listed for her on the 1901 it just says UnKnown, but there is a marriage a few years earlier for a Sarah Jane Martin to a James Herbert in the same district, and also a possible death for James Martin a few years before this in Chorlton too, I need to order the Sarah Marriage to James Herbert to see if she is a widow, and then the certificate for Sarah to James Martin to confirm this is the same woman.
Andrew can i ask what information if any was on the entry you found for the William born to James the stone cutter? does it mention mother Sarah please?
I saw St Fergus while searching as i couldn't find a William with father James in the census's i did wonder if maybe like B'ham people put the suburb, and not knowing Scotland well, whether I had missed something. I don't know his sisters names, nan never mentioned them although she knew Williams Wife's father she never knew her mothers name... none of Williams family names were ever mentioned, but i wonder if they were Elizabeth and Sarah Herbert (half sister), nan said his family remained in Scotland, maybe this was his fathers family, what became of his sisters i don't know and if they ever married, whether it was in Scotland or Lancs... I know his wifes family stayed in Lancs, they were actually living with her widowed father and brother in 1911 in Chorlton on the Medlock before moving to Birmingham. As i say Nan mentioned his widow received an allowance from his family to help her with the upkeep of the 6 children. I have emailed the cemetary where i have found they are i believe buried to see if they can give me any information to help, but a week on I have recieved no reply from them.
Can anyone tell me what the dates were for the census's being taken, I know in England they were mostly taken in April of the census year, could it be that (if it is the right William in 1901 in Chorlton) that his family could have been travelling backwards and forwards to Scotland, and he could have been on the England one and Scotland one for the same year, hence the two William Martins in Taylor households?? Thank you

William's mother is listed as Sarah Jane Martin, maiden surname Taylor; married 20th April 1881 Manchester. A digital image of the certificate can be downloaded from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.
All the best,

Many thanks for that Andrew, I am now thinking this is deffiinately the right road to follow, I will order the two marriage certificates and see what they hold, but it is deffinately looking possible now, it makes sense he is already in Chorlton in 1901 for him to marry in 1903. I am going to check GR and Ancestry to see if anyone has the people listed for James's family in their tree to see if i can rule them out, or match them as being deffinates, thank you all so much for your help, will update you when i have more information from the marriage certificates, hopefully the certificate for James Martin and Sarah will list his occupation as Stone Cutter/Mason and his father being John, and hopefully her father, or some small clue.

Well that's thrown a spanner in the works, just checked marriages for James Martin to Sarah to order the certificate, and there is NO marriage in Manchester, well not that i can find, checked FreeBMD and Lancs registers office website
Seems they have made up the date for appearances!! checked Scotlands people, no marriage for them there either, thinking she'd said born Manchester and they'd confused it for place of marriage.... can't find a marraige in any of the country's anywhere for them
why oh why isn't this research easy
Let's hope there's some info on the second marriage certificate haha

Hi Claire
The satisfaction comes from unearthing a tiny scrap of information which leads on to greater things and an entire brick wall suddenly falls down.
When you retire to bed at night with a warm glow having uncovered a bit of info which led you to spend far too much on scotlandspeople -but you added umpteen new folk to your family tree
then you know you are really hooked. (and a proper detective to boot )

We only do this to ourselves because our predecessors were a twisted lot who wanted to make life difficult for us --- at least mine werewhy oh why isn't this research easy

Good evening Russell, the curse of being a Genealogy junkie ay!
I do now wish looking back i had taken more heed of the old stories Nan and family always told, and that i had started to research my tree many moons before I did. Looking back my Gt Aunty god bless her who was Williams daughter died aged 96 some time ago now, she never had children to pass information onto, but i bet she held all the information i need to crack this open. With Nan dying I did claim Gt Aunty's last belongings from Nans house, it was wonderful to find her original Birth and Marriage Certificate (the BC is now 105 years old!), even her Holy Communion book and letter from the Vicar on the sad death of her mom (Williams Widow in WW2) and some Postcards he had sent to his family before he was killed in WW1. Things like that are priceless. The highs of finding information doesn't last long and you're back to earth with a bang when you hit yet another wall to break threw
It's been like this on every line of my family, people claiming to be married when they aren't and having the most popular names going!! illigitamate children haha but i continue pulling my hair out and torturing myself daily, spending countless amounts of money on subscriptions/certificates and credits hehe Well i suppose we all need a bad habit, and this is mine! I am off to buy a new chisel and hammer hehe

Hi Claire
There is a word for those happy finds - serendipity.
Sometimes things fall into place and odd disssociated facts (or events) suddenly link together. A great aunt (well second cousin really !) died at the age of 93. She had no relatives and never married so I fell heir to all her papers, photographs and memorabilia [including a complete collection of cat ornaments]. I was still in the process of sorting through my mother's collection from her long (96 years) and busy life so another box load of papers was almost more than my wife could take
Out of the blue I had an enquiry through Genes Re-united about this aunt and it turned out to be her nephew who had been adopted as a young child and all contact lost. I was delighted to off-load her papers to him (after I had scanned in copies for the family tree of course
)
He did not know that his grandfather had died in the Great War; and left with all his papers, burial records, photograph, birth papers, photographs of his mother whom he could not even remember, and grandmother as well as many other bits about his family.
All stemming from a chance enquiry
And I was able to add another branch of the family to my tree
We say "Chance would be a fine thing !" and sometimes it is.
