I'd agree on the pronunciation, though a bit further south of Aberdeenshire it tends to be more like Doogut.

As I was typing up those spelling vars. I was beginning to wonder if the name perhaps had more to do with Doocots (buildings, very often of interesting shape and construction, to house "doves", often found in country estates and the grounds of large houses ..as a way of having fresh meat to hand when required, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dovecote ) than "doing guid". Pronunciation of Duguid and Doocot is very simmilar.

Best wishes
Lesley

Many thanks Lesley

[quote="WilmaM"]I'd never heard of it before but there are over 1,000 records on the IGI and a surname search on Scotlands People gives an ever increasing total as the years pass - from 470 in 1841 to 1134 in 1901.

I'd say it was a version of 'Do-Good' so sounds of pretty ancient origin.

Is this them in 1841?

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Anne - thanks for your offer to take a photo of the graves at Keithhall, but last year, a wonderful contact from this site Carolyn (csa), actually did go and photograph the graves for me which was just amazing - so now I have very clear colour photos of the graves and church which I printed out from her email photos.
It's also interesting now to have the two possible interpretations of the name.
By the way I'm not sure if I am replying in the correct place - the site has changed a bit since last year where I used to be able to post a reply under each individual answer, so hopefully you get this post. Please let me know if I am missing something.

PS I also attempted a "quote" reply to Wilma M and Lesley B so thanks to those two also if that didn't work correctly.

By the way - just while I was typing this reply, a report of the heavy snow in the NE of Scotland just came on our TV news - WOW - amazing - we've just had our second hottest summer since records started in Australia which would have been late 1700's - or early 1800's I imagine. Hope your weather improves soon.

Hi

Great that you have these photos. You are doing fine posting in the right places.

As you say the weather here leaves a little to be desired and can't improve fast enough for me. No sign in the near future though.

Brrrrrrrrrr
