Re: what one could it be :/
Hmmm, well, Matthew appears to be in some institution(?) in Lochwinnoch with lots of other people. He is transcribed on Ancestry as "Mathew Aleson" and is at "Calderhaugh or Main or High Street." I can't find anyone in that "Household" in FreeCen, so perhaps it hasn't been transcribed yet.
Don't see William offhand.

The thing is, you can't get Walter "done with" until you know some more about him and can hopefully figure out which birth is his. My guessing one way or the other won't help and it won't prove a thing.
Have you downloaded the marriage record? With luck, it will say where Walter is from, which might help. I see they married in Lanarkshire, probably in Isabella's parish, so his place of residence, if different, might be mentioned.
Otherwise, we'll have to look around for wills and other records that just might have the crucial bit of information. It often helps to research side branches, neighbours, etc. because that all-important bit of information might be only given in, say, his brother's or cousin's records...

Sarah

Gary,
If I were you I'd be making a trip to The Mitchell Library to have a look at the poorhouse applications.
There is a fair chance that Isabella made one (or perhaps one of the daughters) while they were living at Glasgow.
Regards,
Annette

Re: what one could it be :/
Only a guess, as I'd really need to see the document, but going from the usual pattern of these things...
on the marriage cert it only says walter allison ploughman lanarkshire and isobel gilmour something something. its hard to make out what it says after gilmour
- could it be residing here? Does it really only say Lanarkshire for Walter? I'd expect a parish namethe first word is ending in ding and the second word looks like here or where
