Hello Lesley,
They seem to have been breeding ok for a few years and then came to a grinding halt when they were still quite young. Do we know if he was home in 1861 and where she died and what of? If there was a problem with the marriage maybe she applied for poor relief at some stage.
All the best,
Alan

Re: Hugh Neil
Hi Alan,
I'm not seeing Hugh in 1861
Nor Jane
The closest I can come to the children are these three with their grandmother, but without knowing Hugh's mother's name I don't know if this can be the correct bunch (Hugh was a boarder in another family in 1851 and in 1841 his mother is noted as "Mrs Neil"
)
1861
Maitland, Dailly, Ayrshire
Lillias Neil, 56, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Flowerer
Jane Neil, 8, born Dailly, Ayrshire, Scholar
John Neil, 5, born Dailly, Ayrshire
Marin Neil, 3, born Dailly, Ayrshire
Elise will be able to tell us who Hugh's mother was. For the moment, this is the only record I see. (Unless he was the "Hugh O Ned" who is a Prisoner at the Central Police Office in Glasgow on census night in 1861. He is a baker, born Glasgow, but age is transcribed as 22.)
Regards,
Sarah

Re: Hugh Neil
Thankyou for all the information Alan; very helpful.
Hugh was a Baker; on the 1851 Scotland census it states that he's an apprentice baker living as a lodger at 226 High Street Glasgow. He went on to own his own bakery in NZ.
Hughs mothers name was Mary Johnston.
Hughs wife Jane died of bronchitis. She died at 93 High Street Glasgow aged 39.
Thankyou
Elise

Re: Hugh Neil
Hi Elise,
Looks like he didn't waste anytime remarrying as Jane died December 1867 in Glasgow and he married Hannah out here in New Zealand in 1868 and in those days communication would have been snails pace.
I would say that Hugh and Jane were estranged when he left for New Zealand.
On Jane's Death cert, Hugh's occupation looks like Seaman !
There is a family on the 1941 http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
here that looks like his .

Re: Hugh Neil
Hi Maureen,
You found the same one I did with "Mrs Neil" as the helpful name of his mother! They are there in 1851 also:
1851
41 Sth Albrin St, Glasgow St David
John Neill, 51, Head, born Glasgow, Bookseller
Mary Neill, 51, Wife, born Glasgow
James Neill, 18, Son, born Glasgow, Bookseller
Mary Neill, 16, Daughter, born Glasgow
Frances Neill, 10, Daughter, born Glasgow
Isabella Neill, 4, Daughter, born Glasgow
But I can't find ANYBODY in 1861... Not John & Mary & family, nor Hugh & Jane & family. Where are they all?
Elise, were you able to find any of the family members in 1861?
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Hugh Neil
Hi again,
Ancestry has a tree for a Carling Family that has reference to Hugh ,John and Mary Neil.
No longer have a subscription so can't look at it.

Re: Hugh Neil
Hi Maureen,
Thanks for the tip. That seems to be the tree of someone following the family of Hugh's youngest sister Isabella, since that's where all the details are. The owner of the tree doesn't post anything about Hugh except his birth and the names of the parents (but Mary's maiden name isn't in the tree either). The last census for John is 1851, but death date is unknown. No family members have an entry for 1861...
Interestingly, sister Isabella (who married William Anderson Sawers in 1866) moved to London and was already there in 1871, so maybe that's a direction to look. I'm off to bed now, however

Re: Hugh Neil
Thanks for the help Maureen.
Sarah, I couldn't find any of the family after 1861 either. The only thing I did manage to find was Hugh's two sisters marriage entries. Frances Neil married a James Albert Campbell 29/12/1866 in Glasgow and Isabella Duncan Neil married William Anderson Sawers 31/8/1866 also in Glasgow (they went on to live in London).
On Isabellas marriage entry it states that their parents John and Mary are both deceased.
This is all that I can find on the family. (I do know John and Marys son Robert immigrated to Australia because that's my direct line but as far as the rest of the family go I'm quite stuck).
On Hughs marriage to Hannah Dixon Rogers in NZ in 1868 it has his brother James Neil as a witness.
