Hello Ken,
it seems that the £7 risked was worthwhile. By the way, I would recommend putting details on only one thread: it is easier for helpers to collate events if they appear in only one place.
There is an online site for Newcastle births and marriages but it is currently down. The link to the form for marriage searches is:
http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf ... h?openform
Alternatively, call Newcastle Register Office on 0191 232 8520 or 9921 (I hope that the numbers are current), and ask them if they have a marriage of Hugh Sinclair and Sarah Stokoe between 1885 and 1891. They can do a search on their local computer, and on several personal visits I have found the staff unfailingly helpful, provided that you are patient at busy times. They will not tell you the father's name, so you will need to buy the certifictae for that.
Unfortunately, English certificates have a major failing in that only the fathers are mentioned (another failing is that maiden names are not usually mentioned for second or later marriages). I would be very confident that you will find a marriage in the Newcastle district and that his father will be Hugh Sinclair.
Regards,
John

Death Cert.
Have just received the Death Certificate of Catherine Sinclair.
1885 Sub-district of Westgate. County of Northumberland.
14th July 1885. 90 Back George Street. Newcastle.
Catherine Sinclair. Age 28. Wife of Hugh Sinclair. Tinsmith.
This matches up with Hugh moving to England with Catherine from Perth.
From there she died in 1885 and then he married Sarah Barrie, nee Lawrence in 1905.
This makes Sarah my Father's Mother but as yet cannot find their marriage certificate. No joy on Internet.
