Whites of Marlefield go missing

What a wonderful surprise - thank you so much for your post. It is a long time since I looked at those Whites. Will remind myself of that branch and get back to you very soon. I am certainly interested in the Whites as there are other connections to the name and my sister and I used to be taken by my grandmother to visit a lovely furniture shop in Kelso which was called Oliver White's a family my grandmother had close connections with.

Thank you again for getting in touch. I am glad that Google led you here. This is a great site, so well run and friendly. I wouldn't have had nearly such good fun with my researches without it.

However I shall say no more until I have chewed over the family tree......except to ponder on the fact that my 4 x gt grandfather was a Thomas Middlemast married to an Ann Douglas.

Thanks for your PM. (I'm responding publicly because I want to get my names “out there” for anyone else researching them).

Sorry, haven't yet established any connections there.

I think my Adam Scott's parents were Andrew Scott (c1781, Morebattle) & Elizabeth Jarden (c1782, Hawick) whose children were Margaret Scott (c1805, Eccles), Adam Scott (c1814, Morebattle), Thomas Scott (c1818, Morebattle), James Scott (c1821, Morebattle), Robert Scott (c1824, Crailing), Richard Scott (1826, Crailing) & Milroy Scott (1829, Crailing). There is a large time gap between Margaret's and Adam's births, which raises the possibility of Margaret being from an earlier marriage or relationship but I haven't found anything in this regard.

Your Janet Scott (c1814, Crailing) might be related, but I haven't been able to go beyond Andrew Scott (c1781, Morebattle) to find his parents & siblings.

As your Ann Douglas (born 1760) married Thomas Middlemost, she is clearly is a different person to my Ann Douglas who married Walter White in 1773 and continued to have children with him until 1789.

Regarding my earlier post re Walter White who married Margaret Tait, I see now that there were two Walter Whites born in Crailing about the same time, one c1789 (to Walter White & Ann Dowglas), and the other c1891 (to George White, no mother stated). Either of these could be the Walter White who married Margaret Tait. The matter might be further complicated by the possibility that the respective fathers (Walter and George) were closely related, perhaps brothers. In fact we see that George White & un-named mother had more children in Eckford – Margaret (1784), Thomas (1790), Walter (1791), Mary (1796), so we could be seeing their shared ancestral forenames coming through in the naming of their respective children. Which makes it all rather uncertain.

In my previous post I said "there were two Walter Whites born in Crailing" - I should of course have said “born in Eckford”.

It seems your Margaret Tait married one of them, with the other Walter White marrying Margaret Dun on 26 Mar 1820 in Eckford (and in Ancrum).

So we have two Walter Whites born in Eckford - in 1789 and 1791.
And two Walter Whites married in Eckford - in 1820 and 1821 - both to Margarets! (Margaret Tait & Margaret Dun).

We know for certain that the Margaret at Marlfield in the 1841 & 1851 Census is Margaret Tait, because the birth records of the children in that household name Margaret Tait as the mother. But those Census don't tell us which Walter White she married – his age in those Census indicates he was born c1795, which is out by 4 years if he's the Walter born 1791; but if it's out by 4 years, why couldn't it just as easily be out by 6 years and be the Walter born 1789.

Unfortunately I can't find the other Walter White (& Margaret Dun) in any Census or elsewhere, which might have given us further ages to consider.

FS Wiki mentions that the Eckford Parish death register only covers the period 1783-1793, so I don't expect to find any helpful pre-1855 death record on SP.

Perhaps Memorial Inscriptions will give us further info to help determine which Walter married which Margaret. Do you have an MI for your Margaret Tait?
