Hi Tish,

How frustrating. If it is her then why would she give her mother's name as Stewart - unless that is her mother's mother's maiden name.

I still think it is her though.

Since she appears to have travelled to and married in Glasgow I'll have a look at the poorhouse index next time I'm there just in case she made an application.

Thanks Annette - that would be so helpful. Her mother's maiden name was Grassick, of that I'm certain. It is so frustrating but I'm addicted to the search now!

Wasn't Helen Mitchell the real name of Australian singer Nellie Melba? Maybe that was where the mention of Australia came in!

You are quite correct, Dame Nellie Melba was born Helen Porter Mitchell, her father was a Scot who emigrated to Australia around 1851 he was David Mitchell and her mother was Isabella Ann Dow, she was the eldest of 7 children.

Annette - I owe you a pint!!!! This is her, my long lost Helen Mitchell!

I went back to 1871 when I last 'saw' her, working as a Cook in Tullynessle and guess who works nearby only one Gilbert Mcintosh born Dornoch, Sutherland so, mistakes in age and mother's maiden name notwithstanding, I think these are 'mine'. And am I happy - took 20 years!!

A marriage is indexed at SP of a Gilbert McIntosh and Ellen Mitchell in 1872. Although her age is a bit out I think this could be your lady.

The family are in Newcastle on later census records. Looks like Ellen died there in 1905.
