Andy,

A quick question....re the 1841 census (1st thing you posted today) How do we know for sure that Thomas is their son....I assume that because he was born in 1823 that he had left home by 1841 hence not being with the parents...?

Also why in one census is the mother (Jane/Jean/Jeannie) a Thompson and her daughters are Hoatsons?

And can we be sure that Jean/Jane/Jeannie is the same perosn that came from Dumfries. I have no idea where Dumfires is in relation to Lanark (going to find a map in a second!)

Still lost in it all but incredibly grateful!

Hi Legs,
And another quick question! - do you have Thomas NEILSON's DC?, ie the Thomas who married Elizabeth HOATSON.
What were the details?
Jack

Hi Jack :D

I'm afraid all I have is the info on here, I've only just moved my research north of the boarder so all this is very new (and exciting). I've not yet worked out Scotland's People so I have no certificates or anything!! :?

Love

All that has been posted is 100% positive. (I wouldn't have bothered otherwise).

Hoatson/Howatson engaged my interest so, like I said, I got carried away.

Unless a few Mothers were playing "away from home" the information given is 100% correct.

In Scotland married females retain (or can) their Maiden Name hence you can search for deaths using both names (England doesn't have this).

Like I said I got carried away but can guarantee that all information is 100% correct.

Regarding Thomas, the son, just check out the death cert in 1892.

Scottish records are very good!
