Thank you for the census. I had already worked out that Jean was wrong as she was 10 (and called Jane ) in 1851.Although in later years John & Euphemia's daughter Christina seemed to magic a daughter out of thin air - but that is the next part of the mystery !
She married George Turner Livingston and they had a daughter Euphemia who was born and died in 1878. I have the birth & death certificates and have seen the gravestone. By 1891 , however , they had a 12 year old daughter Euphemia living with them ! I can find no birth , death or marriage for her. I can only assume that maybe someone else in the family had an illegitimate child around the time of their loss ( although she was not with them in 1881 ), and she was brought up as their own.
