excellent find. I have already found my Barrett family (from Samuel Barrett and Elizabeth McCurdy) on the Ohio ship in 1879. Any idea what the abbreviation H.w in male forenames means?

I don't know about H.w - Howell, Howard? Given that there is a full stop in between the H and the w I'd be inclined to think that they're two separate initials. I had a quick look at the entry on the site and although it shows as H.w. on the index, once you click on that entry it comes up as H.W. Barrett.
