Have checked out the two sites you gave me - great stuff - told me alot about the Lovat scouts which is super. I have a wee notepad which belonged to my grandfather and he kept a diary of where he was going,which country etc,dates, his orders etc during WW1.
Will go back to them again

Sorry I should've said, yes he did!
Will keep a note of that entry though as I have connections in that area also so you never know.
Sadly his brother didn't survive but he fought for South African Infantry and i found his entry on the cwgc site under South African nationality so I guess his signing up papers would not be in this country. Any ideas of sites for S Africa?

As far as I'm aware there are only limited army records beyond the mid-1800s which are catalogued in the on-line National Archives catalogue.

I was just drawing a note of caution so that everyone realised that there is a distinction between the records that TNA holds, and what can so far be accessed via the on-line catalogue, - "accessed" that is in terms of seeing what TNA holds rather than the full record.

A perfect fit in terms of the natural regimental area link for someone who served in SA in the Lovat Scouts, then served in WWI ................
