Ok....then if John and Catherine weren't married in 1881....I'm assuming that this is Catherine at home:

Hi Jean and Audrey,
I'm not going to help much here. I could kick myself for not looking at Greenbrae Loaning on the 1891 census when I was at The Mitchell today.
Bye the way Audrey it still exists today.
Here's how it looked in the 1890's map showing Greenbrae
I had a look at the OPR film today for any sign of Mary's birth but could not find one. However I did find one for her sister Jean as submitted on the IGI. This was in Lockerbiehill as per census.
Audrey, I think if you have proof that Mary's maiden name is Douglas then I would certainly be claiming this lot as my family.
This looks like brother John in 1881

Hi Audrey and Annette
I said I was going to quit didn't I?.....
Audrey I honestly can't tell you if I think that is a link in your SEWELL family to the CAIRNS name or not. I've looked everywhere hoping to find your John SEWELL in 1851 in Scotland but I don't find him. You'd think he'd be nearby Mary in Dumfries somewhere. If the Thomas SEWELL living with grandparents in Greenbrae Canonbie is a brother or nephew or cousin to your John then that would explain why John (who states in 1861 that he was born in Lancashire!! would have been hanging around in Dumfries. It would also explain the presence of a boarder named CAIRNS in the household of John and Mary in 1861. I just looked to try and find Thomas SEWELL in 1881 and I'm not finding him. I also just looked to try and find the Edward CAIRNS in 1881 and the only one that looks possible is:
Dwelling: Taylors Court
Census Place: Caldewgate, Cumberland, England
Source: FHL Film 1342245 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5159 Folio 7 Page 7
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Edward CAIRNS M 40 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Head
Occ: Grinder In Cotton Mill (Manuf)
Elizabeth A. CAIRNS M 40 F Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Wife
Emily CAIRNS 12 F Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
John CAIRNS 10 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Edward CAIRNS 7 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Frank CAIRNS 5 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
James CAIRNS 2 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
William CAIRNS 14 d M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
....which is really not the best news as the address of Caldewgate has brought me back to the beginning where I thought I had found John SEWELL and Catherine...but it was not them!!! So there!!! Yes I'm as confused as I was when I got up today
Like Annette has said....I do think that is the right DOUGLAS family with little Mary....but darned if I can help you get the connection to John SEWELL & family untangled!
Best wishes
Jean
