Loree wrote:Annette, Thanks so much for the heads up on the two death records. I'm pretty confident that Mary Ann O'Rourke Cogans is the correct one. Her place of death, Burnbank, is kind of backed up with her son's stated address of 16 years on his Poor House application.

The Ann Cox Cogan is a little trickier, although much of it fits in too. Right husband (James Cogan) and her approximate age. She d. at the Poor house, but her usual address is not anything I've come across before (or yet....). And I wonder what happened to her surname CASSIDY, as shown on her daughter's death.

Just wanted to thank you again. You really helped!!

Hello Loree,

I had a look for Anne's application today but there is nothing indexed under Cogan, Cogans or Coggans.

Perhaps it was made by the person she was living with. Was the death registered by the Governor? What was her usual address?

Regards,
Annette M

COGANS in Glasgow

Hi Annette,
Well, thank you for looking for the application!

Here is what I copied from the extract off SP.

DEATH RECORD: 16 August 1881, Dennistoun, Lanark
ANN COGAN, Widow of James Cogan, Labourer, d. August Sixteenth 1881, Barnhill Poor House, near Glasgow. Usual residence, 7 (?)Clewell Place (?). Female, 79y. Parents: John Cox, labourer, deceased, and Elizabeth Cox, maiden surname McDonald(?). Cause: Senile decay. As certified by Thomas Miller, Physician and Surgeon. Ar.Ramsey (?). Ast. Gov.

Unfortunately, the street name is unclear, and just my best guess, in the hopes that I'll come across it again and be able to figure it out.

I guess it was certified by the Governor. Whatever that means? What does that mean? And the Ar. Ramsey... do you think I have that correct?

Hi Loree,
Seeing as you might have a wee wait for the 1851 to come online....
Ann COGANS (46) was as married, but maybe just an error?

Annette,
First... I don't know how that goofy smiley thing got into my last message. Not on purpose, I assure you!

More importantly, I was just going over the records from SP again... in a different light, and the name of the street, Ann (Cox) Cogan's usual residence, popped out at me , 9 Church Place. And that's where our Michael and Catherine (Cogans) Cogans lived. In fact a daughter of theirs married from that residence that very same year, 1881. So.... I guess I can claim Ann as my own.

Another great day!
Thank you again...
Loree

COGANS in Glasgow

Hi Jack,
Well that was a fun little message to receive! Thank you so very much.

It all fits in perfectly. Certainly as far as John and Mary Ann and family. And the other two families too... I can't see how they can't be mine too.

As for Ann Cogans being "marr." Even in latter day censuses, I see people calling themselves "married" even when widowed. Maybe they didn't understand the question, or the instructions, or maybe, because they had children with them, went with the married. Who knows?! It's possible too that John was just away from home, perhaps back and forth to Ireland, and missed the census. I only know he was deceased by the time of his daughter's marriange in 1859. Most likely Ann was a widow in 1851 though....

Many thanks again!
Loree

Hello Loree,

Don't know anything about the smiley (wish I'd seen it now) but I'm glad you were able to pin Ann down.

Kind regards,
Annette M
