Hello again everyone! Seems like I've stirred up some sleuthing interest here! I have checked my notes - Murdoch and Agnes married on 19 Jan 1875. Both lived at 28, Scott Street, Bridgeton. Murdoch's parents were Alexander (what a surprise) and Ann ( my informant couldn't read her maiden name) Does this help?
Murdoch McKenzie may have had a brother called Jack who emigrated to America (this info comes from my old mum so may not be reliable!) Either Agnes or Murdoch had a relation called Lizzie who lived in Liverpool and took in Agnes' children when she emigrated.
Looking for my G Grandparents.....

Hi Trishtrash
I would also suggest at this point that you download a copy of the original marriage entry from the Scotlands People web site. Many folk here are very good at reading handwriting and we can probably confirm the name of Murdoch's mother if we can see the original.
You would also be able to download the birth of Agnes in 1856 that Isobel found and check if her parents match those on the marriage entry - in which case you'll have found the right one!
Best wishes
Lesley
Those are the same parent names for the submission on IGI for Paisley, which I would suggest you look up.Murdoch's parents were Alexander (what a surprise) and Ann ( my informant couldn't read her maiden name) Does this help?

ballantyne/mckenzie
Hi,
Had a look at the 1875 marriage certificate. Off to spend a few days in the sun tomorrow, so using up my few remaining credits!
Murdoch was age 23, a Steamship Stoker, and was the son of Alexander McKenzie, Blockcutter Journeyman, and Ann m/s White. Both his parents were still alive. The igi lists a birth of a Murdock McKenzie to this couple in Paisley in 1850 (this is the birth Lesley refers to). Other children were William 1851, Kenneth 1858, Isabella 1860 (all Paisley) then Agnes 1862 central district Glasgow, Alexander 1864 Bridgeton Glasgow and John (Jack?) 1866 Bridgeton Glasgow. The first two births are patron submissions.
Agnes was 21 and was the daughter of George Ballantyne, Seaman Merchant Service and Catherine m/s McKenzie (see my previous posts) They were also both still alive.
The witnesses were John Watson and Janet Mckenzie. The following 1881 census entry may show this Janet with brother Kenneth(born 1858)

There is a marriage recorded between an Alexander Wright and a Janet McKenzie in Bridgeton in 1876, but I haven't checked this out. There is a large gap between 1851 (William) and 1858 (Kenneth) when Alexander Mckenzie and Ann (White) could have had more children, including Janet.
There is an 1880 death entry in Bridgeton for an Ann Mckenzie or White, aged 55, which might be worth checking out.

I passed on all of the info you lovely people gave me to my brother who is also digging. He thinks he may have found Agnes' family in Liverpool on the 1901 Census which would explain why she had relations there to leave her children with!
Thanks to all who have helped with this. I'm so glad I found this site
