Hi Nina

I have now checked every Jane McLaughlin -Kane/Inglis marriage from 1857 to 1870, tried every spelling i can think of for all 3 names and found nothing.

As for John Cotterill i have checked from 1837 to 1842 and although there are a few johns born in the north of england there doesnt seem to be any born in Oldham

So sorry i couldnt be of any help

Good luck

Hi Nina,

I had another look for your John Cotterill's birth - whilst i couldnt find one in Oldham i did find one in Salford, using multimap i discovered Salford isnt actually that far from Oldham, this John is about the closest i can find.

Cotterill John - Salford - Jan-Mar 1843 - XX 8111

If i come across another i will post it for you

Hi Wee Ina,

Thanks for continuing to look. I do appreciate it so much.

I think I may have a clue for John Cotterill's family. I have recently found that he had a son Frederick, born 1879 and died 1880. In 1883 he had another son and also called him Frederick (I have known about him for some time). I think the name must be important to John or his wife Jane, so I am hoping maybe there will be a pre 1871 census somewhere in England with an appropriate John with a Frederick in the household (John's parents are supposed to be Joseph and either Jane or Sarah....no kids were named Joseph, but two daughters named Jane and Sarah). And to add weight to the importance of the name Frederick, my great grandmother also had a son named Frederick, which I KNOW was not a name from her husband's family.

An intesesting fact which I probably should mention is that the second Frederick was born in Southampton in 1883. Maybe there is some Cotterill family down that way...or even some McLaughlin/Inglis people? Of course they could have just gone there for work, as John was a hammerman, and may have been working on the docks for a few years. At any rate, they were there after 1881 and 1886, when they were back in Glasgow for the birth of my great grandmother.

Such an elusive lot! If I ever find them I think I will throw a party!
