Hello and welcome to Talking Scot.

I thought I'd try and solve the mystery of Ann Cowie's death and I found this.

I am pretty sure this is Ann Cowie with Oswald in 1901 at Coatbridge -

Oswald Riddell 41 born E Kilbride
Annie Riddell 41 born New Monkland
Janet Riddell 9
Isabella Riddell 4
Duncan Mcgregor 42

and here is Robert with Catherine McCormick in 1901 at Hamilton -

Robert Riddell 39
Catherine Riddell 39
John Riddell 14
Catherine Riddell 11
Hamilton Riddell 10
Robert Riddell 8
Francis Riddell 5
Malcolm Riddell 4

So I'm thinking they are 2 different people.

Regards,
Annette

Hi sjdagutis,

I go along with Annette's thoughts that these are two different people.

A look at the online IGI shows the following children, all born in East Kilbride to John Riddell and Martha Muir:
  • Henrietta Riddle, birth: 20 August 1855
    Robert Riddell, birth: 5 April 1859 *
Robert Riddell, birth: 25 August 1861
Elizabeth Riddle, birth: 18 October 1863
Francis Riddell, birth: 8 March 1866
Thomas Riddell, birth: 15 August 1868
Margaret Riddell, birth: 5 August 1871
James Riddle, birth: 14 October 1873
* According to an addendum to his birth certificate, the first Robert had his name altered to Oswald Dykes Riddell from 15-May-1859.

As to where each of the children were on census nights, well that is another question. You get that with genealogy: instead of getting answers, you sometimes get more questions.

OSWALD D RIDDELL can be found in the 1881 census using Ancestry, and then found mis-indexed on ScotlandsPeople as DONALD D RIDDELL, age 21.
OSWALD DYKES RIDDELL can be found age 51 in the 1911 census. Also there are his wife and four of their seven children.
Note that Thomas shown as age 2 on Ancestry's transcription of the 1881 census, was age 12 when you view the census page on ScotlandsPeople.

As for Agnes of 1884, her birth is there as AGNES RIDDELL McCORMACK. Her death can be found in 1929 as AGNES DOUGLAS (other surnames RIDDELL and McCORMICK). From that information, you should also be able to find her marriage.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for the information everyone.

I have since confirmed that Oswald Dkyes Riddell and Robert Riddell are separate people; they are brothers.

I have still not found information about Oswald Riddell's wife, Annie Cowie's death, though I have learned that sometime between after the 1911 Census of Scotland was taken and 1924 she lived on 10 Parkend Street in Northern Ireland. She then immigrated to Montreal, Canada, arriving on 18 May 1924. Her address there was 2762 St Catherine Street. Her daughter, Annie Riddell, had emigrated in 1913. Several other of Oswald and Annie's children also left Scotland for Canada between 1924-1927. However, it appears Oswald remained in Scotland as he died in Airdrie on 11 Feb 1935. His son-in-law indicated Oswald was a widower on the death registration.

I do not know why Annie (Cowie) Riddell moved to Northern Ireland but have two clues: 1) her son John Riddell lived there before immigrating to Canada, worked as a bartender, and lived at the same address as his mother and 2) she had a married sister who also lived in Belfast.

One interesting note. Oswald and Annie's daughter Henrietta married her first cousin, who was named for his uncle, Annie's father. She was the second wife of Oswald Dykes Riddell Dick; his mother being Annie Cowie's sister, Helen. Oswald Dick was killed in action during WWI on 21 Jul 1918 at the Second Battle of the Marne. Henrietta remarried, adopted a son, and also immigrated to Canada.

Thanks! The first list are definitely "my" Riddells. Wife and some of the children of Robert Riddell (1861-1944). The second list I do not recognize. I have three Thomas Riddells in my tree but none of them died in 1943. I will work on how they may be connected.
