Newfield

Post by Raymond Crawfurd » Sat Nov 25, 2006 1:14 am

Many thanks Lesley.
Yes, I had found the entry about Major Robert Crawfurd's father and his death in 1843. Robert left the Army in about 1852, but I haven't yet found out if he died, was killed or left by some other means. So far I have only found that he had a daughter Letitia who married and I think went to live in England. Robert had two brothers, Reginald and Patrick and an uncle John, so maybe one of them inherited Newfield. Does that help at all?

Hello Raymond

The 1881 census does not show any Crawfords living in any of the buildings of Dundonald associated with Newfield. It would be interesting to note who the occupants were in 1871 and 1861 but unfortunately I can't search on address for those years. Perhaps someone else will volunteer to assist. If not you could always rent the census microfilm in at a Family History Center and scroll through to find the answers for yourself. Having names to work with could help piece together if they might have been descendents of your Crawfords.

Best wishes
Jean

Dear Jean,
Mnay thanks for your help. As you say. it seems as though te Crawfuerds may have left by 1881 trhough most of the addresses are obviously houses on the estate. I will have allok at the earlier censuses and I will also contact the Dundonald library. Thanks a lot, Raymond

Thanks, Dave. Yes I am interested in Letitia and indeed any others of the family. Since I last posted a note, things have changed a lot and the chain we were following has now broken so i am starting again. What I am after is any living descendants of the Crawfurds of Newfield. Can you help? Yours Raymond

Greetings Raymond,

My name is Peter Cowley of Vancouver Canada. Robert Crawfurd (1) of Newfield (died 1843, wife Frances O'Brien) was one of my great-great-great grandfathers. His son Robert (2), my great, great grandfather I know very little about other than that he had two sons, Galfridus and Robert (3), and one daughter Frances, my great-grandmother. Her husband was Edward Charles Bentinck Bagshawe (whose mother Emma Hoare was Frances O'Brien's great niece). The Bagshawe's came to Canada in the late 1890's with Robert (2)'s sister Frances (two of whose watercolours of English countryside landscapes I have in my home), settling in Victoria, British Columbia. The Bagshawes had eleven children including the oldest daughter, my beloved grandmother, Sybil Frances Bagshawe.

I would happily colaborate/share with you in any way that might be of use.

Cheers,

Peter Cowley

Dear Peter,
Thank you so much for picking up this thread and for giving me the information about Robert [2] and his descendants, your ancestors. This is the first I have heard about Robert [2] having had any children, other than Letitia, so I am really interested in Robert [3] and Galfridus. Do you have any information about either of these two that might lead me to them? Interestingly, the main line of the Crawords of Aucheanmes also emigrated to Canada where their line died out, but I have just made contact with the collateral branch which is still based in Scotland. Looking forward to hearing from you and, once again, many thanks for the news. Yours Raymond

Hi, Raymond

To be clear, my information shows that Robert Crawfurd who died in 1843 had seven children including the famous Letitia (who married well) and my Robert (2). It was Robert (2)--of whom I do not know so much--who had three children, Galfridus, Robert, and my great-grandma, Frances.

Galfridus has a living granddaughter in England whom my daughter visited several years ago. I will try to find her coordinates and be in touch with her to see if she is willing/able to communicate with you.

Also I will send you the documents/citations that I have used to establish my understanding of this part of the tree.

My personal aim is to find out more about Robert (3) particularly the identity of his wife, my great-great-grandma.

I'd be happy to hear of any info on this branch that you may wish to share.

Cheers,

Peter

Many thanks, Peter. That will all be most helpful. I will certainly send you the family tree that we have which takes your line back to the origins of the Crawfords. I have a copy of the Inventory of Robert[1] and the details, such as they are, of Robert[2]'s inheritance. I am not sure how to send attachments through this forum. My email address is raymondATcrawfurd.plus.com. If you could let me have your address, I will send you what I have. Of course, I would be very interested in making contact with your cousin in England. With very best wishes, Raymond

Hello Peter & Raymond,

You may have already covered this ground but here are some odds and ends I’ve found. There’s quite a variety of stuff available in the 19C newspapers and from Googling. I’ve only provided a rough summary.

The Derby Mercury (Derby), Wednesday, June 23, 1841
Marriage notice of George Walker of Eastwood, Notts., to Emma Crawfurd

The Morning Post (London), Friday, March 15, 1844
Marriage at Eastwood, Notts., William Henry Orde Powlett to Letitia Crawfurd

This 1852 book has Robert Crawfurd (2) as an officer in the Rifle Brigade
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=9mN ... 22&f=false

This book has him as a Lieut. Colonel in the Rifle Brigade
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=0aU ... 22&f=false

In 1860 he is made Lieut. Colonel of Robin Hood Rifle Volunteer Corps.
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=fFg ... 22&f=false

Nottinghamshire Guardian (London), Thursday, January 19, 1860
A story about a Parade of the Robin Hoods. The new Col. Crawfurd had 17 years army service, 5 in Rifle Brigade. He had commanded the Italian Legion at Malta during the Russian War.

Nottinghamshire Guardian (London), Thursday, May 31, 1860
Parade of Robin Hoods under Col. Crawfurd, A Mrs Walker of Eastwood Hall was one of the mentioned spectators.

The Derby Mercury (Derby), Wednesday, February 20, 1861
Colonel resigns from Robin Hoods. His resignation letter was written from Bolton Hall, Bedale. (Residence of Lord Bolton) There’s a bit of controversy in the months prior to then.

The Newcastle Courant etc (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), Friday, May 26, 1865
This sounds like him, a reference to a Colonel Crawfurd, Adjutant of the NRV (Northumberland Rifle Volunteers)

Nottinghamshire Guardian (London), Friday, November 24, 1865
Death of Mrs Walker of Eastwood Hall, Notts.

1881 Census, Bolton Hall, York, Lord Bolton, wife Letitia Bolton, their son, Amias, 16yo Frances A Crawford, cousin, born Newcastle, and a great many servants.

The Pall Mall Gazette (London), Friday, January 6, 1882
Death of Lady Bolton

The Morning Post (London), Friday, November 08, 1895
Death of Lord Bolton

The Morning Post (London), Monday, March 16, 1896
Lord Bolton bequeathed to his sister-in-law Frances Crawfurd a life annuity of £70, and to Julia Crawfurd a legacy of £150.

Glasgow Herald (Glasgow), Monday, November 1, 1897
Death at Ayr of Julia Crawfurd, 2nd daughter of late Colonel Crawfurd of Newfield etc

I guess these could be his marriage and births of children. His wife would be one of those listed. The 1871 census, presumably he’s somewhere near London by then, should clarify things. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Dec 1863
CRAWFORD Robert Newcastle T 10b247
CRAWFURD Robert Newcastle upon Tyne 10b247
Hauxwell Richard Newcastle T 10b247

Pattinson Isabella Newcastle T 10b247

Births Mar 1865
Crawfurd Frances Ann Newcastle T. 10b27
Births Dec 1867
Crawfurd Galfridus Reginald J Pancras 1b11

Depending on when he was born, there are a couple of Robert Crawfurd deaths, in 1876 and 1883, in England that may fit the picture.

Deaths Sep 1876
Crawfurd Robert 60 Brentford 3a47
Deaths Mar 1883
CRAWFURD Robert 81 Pancras 1b33

You can access the newspapers here. Please let me know if you have any difficulty finding the newspaper images for any of the above.

Try searching for robin hood rifle and crawfurd, crawfurd newfield, craw* newfield, colonel crawfurd, lord bolton and crawfurd, eastwood hall, bolton hall. Substitute crawford for crawfurd in any of those.

Hope that’s useful,
Alan
