Hello David,
You have certainly given me a lot of help. Unfortunately, I've tried getting the Scottish censuses on ancestry.com but they are not there. I've e-mailed ancestry.com to let me know how I can access them on their site and they usually reply within a day or two. When I do get that information I can get on with it.
Thanks a lot
Elizabeth

Elizabeth the only Scottish census you can access on Ancestry is the 1841 and that is only a transcript (?) you cant view the original. You will get all the Scottish census ie 1841-1901 on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk also for a fee
but well worth it
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

James Farquarson Cordiner
Hi David,
Well I joined scottishpeople but can't find J F Farquarson on any of the censuses. Obviously I'm not doing something right! Did you get all your info from scottshpeople?I was so excited as I thought I was getting somewhere at long last.
Anyway, I'll keep trying.
Cheers

Who's J F Farquarson
I did find plain James CORDINER on the 1851 census at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , in the household of his father John, and mother Catherine, - James was recorded as 22, and shown as "Mar" = Married, and "Mason".
The guidance to the census enumerators was that they were not to record middle names, as in this case with James Farquarson Cordiner (although, fortunately, some enumerators did).
Again, the plain James, aged 32, Stonemason, turns up in Edinburgh in 1861, this time with wife Margret [sic] and wains William, Arthur, and Margret, as well as his mother Catherine, but the spelling of the surname is not CORDINER .......... Hint, search on CORD*NER ...........

Hi David,
I managed to get James Farquarson Cordiner on the 1851 census with his parents John and Catherine.I just couldn't make out where Catherine was born as it wasn't very clear.I couldn't find James on the 1841 or 1861 censuses. You did say to search on the basis of CORD*NER to find him and his family on the 1861 census but I don't know what you meant by ( CORD*NER) I would be interested to know how you got the rest of the information on him. I've just re-joined scotlandspeople. I was with them in 2000 and it seemed a lot easier then to get info than it does now. ( Probably just me )
Regards

Hello Elizabeth
See David's link to show how to use wildcards on Scotlandspeople.
Your Cordiner could have been spelled Cordener. The asterisk covers both options.

Jean
PS Same when looking for Elizabeth/Elisabeth. Search for Eli*abeth will cover both spellings.

Back in that era the spelling of surnames was very flexible and quite variable.
The use of the search term CORD*NER means that "*" can mean any and/or all single or multiple letters, - leading to a surname such as CORDINER, or alternately CORDNER ..........................
