By the way the Ann who married Mathew Main isn't yours. Her parents were James and Isabella Kinkaid.

Don't think Archibald's Ann married which begs the question, to whom are you related?

Archibald, the son, died two years after his dad, single. This was reported by a brother, Robert Kinloch??!!

Very likely this one in 1881:

Dwelling: Glasgow Road Rosevale

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Senga,
Archibald KINLOCH, blacksmith, was born abt 1790 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire,
and daur Ann KINLOCH (1819) was also born there.

Matthew MAIN's wife Ann KINLOCH, according to censuses, was born in Campsie, Stirlingshire.
And after what Andy found, this LDS submission looks like her -

ANNE KINLOCH - Christening: 22 MAY 1814 Campsie, Stirling, Scotland
Parents: JAMES KINLOCH & ISOBEL KINCAID.
--
1851 census 501 (388) Ed 8 p 6 (OLD Kilpatrick)
51 William Street, Duntocher.
Matthew MAIN, head, marr, 36, spinner, cotton, b Old Kilpatrick, DNB
Ann MAIN, wife, marr, 35, -------------------b Campsie, STI
Matthew MAIN, son, 1mo,-----------------b Old Kilpatrick, DNB
Margaret MILLER, visitor, marr, 40, farmer's wife, b NEW Kilpatrick, DNB
James MILLER, visitor, 2, farmer's son, b Barony of Glasgow, LKS
Margaret MILLER, visitor, 4, farmer's daur, b Barony of Glasgow, LKS
[very possibly just coincidence that there is a MILLER family visiting - it is a popular name]
--
In 1861 the same Matthew MAIN & family are at 129 Reid St, Bridgeton, Glasgow.

Hi Senga

My husband has Kinlochs from Dumbarton in his family.
He has Margaret Kinloch born 15/02/1814 Bonhill - but all references to her parents list them as George Kelloch and Agnes Cook who married in Cardross 27/09/1794.
George was born abt 1769 and died in 1833 . This has probably caused more confusion but gives another spelling to consider !
George and Agnes had 9 children but no Archibald - but I am sure there is a connection with a name like that

Morag
Searching mainly Stirlingshire - Hastings,Nicol,Honeyman,Nisbet,Tough,Miller - among others

Wow Jack, you are a godsend.

This is definitely correct as Matthew Main is my great great grandfather. I have his parents as James Main and Jean Dixon but I am at a complete stop after that (yet again ...LOL).

So as for the Kinloch's I was off on the wrong tangent there. Thank you so much for clarifying that for me. Now I have a new starting point there and just need a new starting point for the Main surname. :)

Thanks to everyone for being so friendly and helpful ...especially to an unexperienced newcomer such as myself

Take care all,
Senga

Matthew's parents were John and Catherine Watson (As reported on Death cert), they married 13th MAY 1810 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton.

No IGI children reported to the couple.

James Main and Janet Dixon were from Canonbie so unlikely to be yours.

However, a wee lesson in "Birds of a Feather" to check the parents names.

Matthew is in Old Kilpatrick in 1841, on the same page is a Janet Main 20. and a few pages away there is a Catherine 20 and, a bit further away Jacobina 20.

When I see fairly unusual names for the area, (only 40 Mains in the whole of Dunbartonshire) so close together I start to think relationships.

Janet Main married Robert Sharp on Old Kilpatrick, she died in Glasgow and the parents were John and Catherine Watson.

Catherine married Robert Walker in Old Kilpatrick and died there the parents were John and Catherine Watson.

Jacobina wasn't a sibling but perhaps a cousin.

So in view of the fact that three Mains have the same parents listed it confirms that the parents were, indeed, John Main, a coal miner, and Catherine Watson.
