I don't know if this will help but if you install Quicktime after AlternaTIFF, the settings can get fowled up. (Quicktime takes over). If quicktime opens the file, that is fine but my experience is that I just get a broken link. There are some instructions on the AlternaTIFF website that tells you how to fix the Quicktime takeover.

I have used AlternaTIFF for many years to look at FreeBMD images. It is much easier for it to open in the browser than another program.

As for you computer freezing, usually a restart will cure the problem.
