Post by frances » Mon Aug 21, 2006 3:38 pm

Hello Mallog

I have done al ittle bit of research for my friend who's family come from Leslie in Fife. The family name is PEGGIE.

William Peggie (Pigie) married Agnes Kinnaird 4th October 1853 in Dundee. Their children were all born in Leslie
James 21st June 1864
Agnes & William 20th November 1865
Christian Kinaird Peggie & Nancy 3rd June 1867
Andrew 6th January 1869
Mary 17th December 1871

Perhaps someone out there is looking at the same family

Hi all
Villages....
Balmalcolm, Charlestown, Limekilns (and one branch moved to St Andrews)
in Fife.
Leith in Midlothian, maybe not exactly a village, more a port....but its not Edinburgh!
Grangepans in West Lothian.
Muirkirk, Alton (no longer exists, as far as I remember), Galston & Loudon in Ayrshire.
Tain, Fearn & lots of small steadings in the Easter Ross parishes of Fearn, Tain, Logie Easter, Tarbat & Nigg.
Steadings of Barbour & Cursnoch (no longer exists) in Roseneath Parish, Bonhill, Cardross, Ardmore (not exactly a village either!) all in Dunbartonshire.
Steading of Ledard, Aberfoyle, Perthshire.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I noticed you were researching family from muirkirk. I am too so i just thought i would ask what name you were researching? The name i am researching there is Bell from the mid - late 1800's, before this time they came from old cumnock.

Hi Karen
I've not come acress any Bells so far. My Muirkirk lot are Mitchells & Frasers - bit stuck with them around 1790, though I would have to confess, I've not put a great deal of effort into them - I find I've not really spent a lot of time on my Ayrshire branch, dunno why, I just keep getting distracted by some of the other lines.... and as I'm sure you are aware, you get out what you put in!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Well exactly! I haven't done much research for the past couple of months. I have been trying to enjoy some of the good weather weve been having.

Sure enough in a month or so when it is starting to get dark earlier again i will spend some of my nights with SP and my switch card

If i come across any mitchells or frasers whilst doing my research i will keep you in mind

Karen

Lesley

Mallog's idea is a good one but might need a bit of addition to the site.
If there was a People & Places section where a village name (it would have to be a small community as Mallog suggested) could be started and each person posting would put in the only the names they are researching in that place.
If each entry was 'sticky' or locked it would be up to the person who was interested to make contact with the poster.
If there was a clear format for entering names e.g.

Family surname
common forenames used
dates
occupation (if relevant)

Overlapping patterns might emerge and we might end up knowing everyone who lived in the place at a specified time.
It might mean occasional housekeeping and deletions to remove names which rightly belong elsewhere.
This is one for the Mods to think about.

Working on: Oman, Brock, Miller/Millar, in Caithness.
Roan/Rowan, Hastings, Sharp, Lapraik in Ayr & Kirkcudbrightshire.
Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !
McGilvray(spelt 26 different ways)
Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny

Very good Lesley

After sending you that last post something did ring a bell  with me.

I have an 1841 census with my Bell family on it and living with them is a john mitchell aged 11 (occupation ag. lab). The census is for Old Cumnock though, so he is probably nothing to do with you. I just thought i would mention it out of interest.

Regards
Karen

Hi Mallog
The Galston/Loudon lot are Lyon, Young & Parker. So sorry, not the names you were hoping for!

However, I have note of an Agnes Morton - she married a Hugh Picken in 1862 & their daughter Elizabeth Cunningham Picken b.abt 1864, was a worker in a jelly works, who married James Adams (b.1866) in 1893 and his mother was Jean Parker!

Best wishes
