Glencairn Drive

Post by Maisie » Sat Sep 09, 2006 12:43 pm

Hi Elaine

I hesitate to disagree with a couple of locals, but according to the Royal Mail website there are at least two tenement blocks in Glencairn Drive, although neither includes 102. I wonder if they were reumbered at some stage, or could the number on the birth certificate be something else?

I use the Royal Mail postcode finder and Google earth to do virtual tours of my ancestral haunts as parts of Scotland are on very high resolution. If you have access to Google Earth put in postcode G41 4QN you'll see a 4 sided block enclosing a small green, with another larger block to the south. Glencairn Lane appears to run through the larger block. If you can't access Google Earth I could send you an image if you let me have your e-mail address by PM - provided I can work out how to do it!

Greetin's Maisie,
You kin disagree wey us oanytime ye like pal.
Especially when yer right.
The reason I was asking, was that there appeared tae be too mony faimiles living at the same number at the turn of the century.

Sorry, I suppose I was just being a wee bit too local  . I know the flats (some of which have been built in the last 10 years so I didn't even count them) but because of the number (102) in Glencairn Drive I knew it couldn't be a flat as they are low numbers - I have a friend who lives in one. Most of the newer higher numbered flats are on the left hand side of the road which makes them odd numbers.
Apart from the new flats the houses in this road are still the ones you can see in the postcard.
Maisie, I often use The Royal Mail method when looking for an area I don't know.
If you look at Davie's postcard - Number 68 is where the carriage is and that is the last even numbered house in Glencairn Drive - the green area at the right of the picture is a tennis club and then new flats.
Houses are and always have been (as far as I know) numbered from the city centre out with evens on the right and odds on the left and if you look at an old map of Glencairn Drive it is still exactly the same.

Hopefully Elaine will get back to us with more info.

Kind regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Maisie, I often use The Royal Mail method when looking for an area I don't know.
Guid wan, never thocht o' that before.
I tend to check estate agents, when looking for streets that are still in existence.
The prices of hooses in Glasgow, scare the Shi....livin' daylights oot o' ex-Weegies that are in touch wey me.
£150.000 furr a flat in The Gorbals!!
Will eventually get tae Glencairn Drive, furr a nosy this week.

Hi Elaine,
Not too sure about Glencairn Drive ever classed as being in Govan, but as it is only a 10 minute walk from the one in Pollokshields to Kinning Park.
I would guess it is the same one, and Govan stetched a fair bit at the particular time you are looking at.
Is it the McGregor family you are looking at?

Again Elaine,

I was in the Angel bar yesterday, most of the punters in ther' are Kinnin' Park boays (no tae be confused wey Bhoys, in this neck o' the wood)
I got a phone call this morning.
One theory on Glencairn Drive, was, that half of it was in Pollokshields, the other in Kinning Park.
This could have been the case in the year you are looking at.
It is a thought.
