Not sure if this is any help, but there is a Stewart Heu*han (spelling arrived at by trial & error, staring with wildcards and adding letters to retain result of one death!!) died in 1873 (birth 1825+/- 5yrs), but does not seem to be in Dumfries area - its in Midlothian. Can't check as don't have any current credits...

Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. ...and that * is not a "g"!! But it is one letter as "?" works equally well...Goodness knows what is is  - if you find out, please put me out of my misery!!
later: blooming heck - its a "C"!! Surname is Heuchan Sounds similar to what you are looking for....
If that's a "c" I'm a Chinaman  - it's a "g" :!: i.e. surname Heughan.

IGI gives three matches for birthes to Alexander HUGHAN and Janet PAGAN, - two are submissions, but one is an extract, - all in Kirkmabreck parish, - note that this parish could well be one where the male births aren't on IGI. And BVRI is of no help ..................

Hi David
If that's a "c" I'm a Chinaman - it's a "g" i.e. surname Heughan.
I didn't have the benefit of looking at the actual entry (no active credits to my name at the moment :( ) - I was working from the index alone, in which the surname is given as Heuchan, which may, of course, not be what is written on the actual entry! Maybe a wee note to SP is in order there? It might save any future resarchers of that family a bit of a headache and some wasted credits.

Best wishes
Lesley

Although I didn't lose any credits on one of my census searches I did on SP, I did notice that they had mis-indexed a wee 3 year old visitor to my rellies.

His surname should have been indexed as Girtrig, but it is actually indexed as Pirtrig! Sent them a contact form about it and got confirmation that they'd got it, but there seemed to be a problem about making any change to the index, even though I could prove who he was.

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)
