thanks for clarifing the "f" question on the census -- I have started what I anticipate will be long quest in search of manumission or other documents re Joseph's status as free or slave or otherwise.. . may be time to check for cheap flights to ecosse ... thanks to all who offered direction.. who knew a place called Penicuik would be in my past and my future .. life is full of surprises... what's a "weegie" ? Weegie is a slang term for a Glaswegian - sometimes derogatory, but more often used in banter.

Also, as I gather you are not local to these parts, Penicuik is pronounced penny-cook.
