Have just about got through the Boyd book.
An enjoyable wee tome.
More like wan o’ the wans ye get like, “Things you didn’t know about……” than a pukka historical record..
Ther ur several wee articles for and against irregular marriages, and my favourite wan, “Bad women in bothies” where the Revd Charles Thomson of Wick, “was able to wax eloquent on the subject”
A valid point was made regarding the cost of having the Banns read for a regular marriage.
The price appears to have been between 7/6 and 9/6, while the average wage per week in Scotland (c1850) was 9/- with the agriculture workers getting less.
It has a guid bibliography, and was pleased to see I have seven of the titles referred to, but will now attempt to get two more.
I think it is a worthwhile purchase and will stick it on my reference shelves.
For those not too keen on buying on the Net, McNaughtan’s bookshop in Edinburgh have a copy (£15) and Joe in Otego Lane in Glasgow also has one (£6)

Hi Davie

What a wonderful book the Social Life of Scotland in the Eighteenth Century is. I am ordering a copy of it from Alibris or whatever the name of the company is.

Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention.

I have several Leneman & Mitchison books, all good reads:
Lesley,
I dug out a few boxes and have decided to go on a diet.
However, I did find a few interesting tomes.
Have two copies of "Into the Foreground" by Leah Leneman.
A book of photographs of Scottiah women.
Another one is "Great Scotswomwn" by M. R. Keary, another guid wee read.

Sheila,
Let us know how you get on with the Boyd one.

I also just found a copy of "Oh Canada" A budget of stories and pictures by Members of The Canadian Expediitionary Forces
Some great articles, poems and cartoons.
Put one of the cartoons in the Gallery
"As pants the heart"

Davie
The text of the post you made which was accidently moved has now been added to your post above - there is no way to re-attach a post which has been moved away, so this seemed like the best solution, rather than have it floating about not following on from the rest of the thread.

Best wishes
Lesley
