I see these two certificates as being for the same person, Mary McNeil, married to (1) James Jones, flax weaver and (2) Alexander McNeil, tinsmith. Her parents on the marriage certificate are John(?) McLaughlan and Nancy McLaughlan, M.S. McLaren. Her death certificate shows her parents as John McLachlan and Anne McLachlan, M.S. McLaren.

My feeling is that the son who registered his mother's death did not know his grandmother's name properly (or got it a bit wrong in his state of grief). As for the spelling of the surname - no worries there, that surname is found spelled in many variations.

Her father's first name on the marriage certificate may well say John. The bracket from the line above is down amongst this name.

Andrew,

It does look like John to start with on the marriage certificate but it is too long to be that is it not? Also for her mother's surname it tome looks like McLahow. I know that may not be the name but that is what it looks like. It does not look like McLaren to me. I also know that Nancy is another name for Ann so that is correct.

Most of the long part that appears to be part of the first name is a fancy "M" for the start of the surname. Ignore that and the bracket from above and I believe you see John written there.

The McLahow that you are seeing includes the descending part of the "g" from the line above. The "n" at the end of the name has a long tail to it. That seems to be this registrar's style for a final "n". See the word seaman in the entry above. I am still happy with McLaren for this one.

Thank you, it does appear to be her. Sadly though only her fathers name is on the certificate and he was a shoemaker.

Nancy is the widow of John McLachlan, Hawker. Guess who the informant was. None other than Mary.

She was 80 years of age, I cant make out what she died of. I have uploaded it. Would it perhaps be Jaundice?

Ahhh. I too am looking and there are a few Ann's rather than Nancy. I cant find Kilmallie on the list of parishes for the census.
