Hi Anne & David,

Thank you so much for replying to my plea. I don't in fact have Helen's birth certificate. We found her on the Yorkshire B.M.D., and never thought to send for her cert. Of course that would give us her mother's maiden name

When I said 'one of three', I knew it was four

, just getting tired I suppose, I never heard the names Henry Stephen though. He was always referred to in the family as Hugh Scott, maybe a passing fancy for a teenager to change his name to something different.

I also recieved a PM on the subject, which suggested that 'Lennox' might have been a mistranscription or a mishearing of, Lanarkshire

Hi again wee Ann (you can't be any wee-er than me!)

I think that on the 1891 census young Susan might be Susan Muir Russell. I wonder if Daddy accidentally registered her as Susan Weir, which was Mum's name instead of Susan Muir after Granny which he had been told to do! Maybe he never had the courage to confess. Guess he may have been so overwhelmed by the event he had to have a wee refreshment to get over it.

Ancestry hedges its bets and indexes Susan's middle name as Meier! Mind you it also indexes Lanarkshire as Lawrakeshire. (Excellent).

Thank you so much to everyone for all the help I have been given. I have sent for Helen's birth cerificate. Can't think why we never did this before. It is so obviously the answer to allaying Uncle Bill's doubts.
