I have been following this topic with interest as I looked in on the site earlier to see if I could find out some information about Register of Corrected Entries. By coincidence this topic is open.

I have two rellies who have had fatal accidents and I have printed off the death certificates from scotlandpeople. There is a reference to the Register of Corrected Entries on each. I have been told that if I order the certificate the information from the Register will be on the back of it.

Since I have the details of the death and I'm not sure if there will be any further information on the back of the certificate I am loathe to pay £13 a time for them. Is this the only way I can get this information apart from going to NRH to look at the record? I live in the south of England.

I see that an earlier posting said that the Registers may be coming online. Is there any more word about when? I have ordered the newspaper notices and am awaiting their arrival.

Hi Carole,

As David has said "on the verge" could mean anything. It is a lot of money to pay for what might not give much more than confirmation of what is on the main entry.

I've admitted that I'd be tempted if I had an RCE on any of my lot. In my case it would be a hard fought conflict between "is it essential to my further research" and "irrepressible curiosity"

Hello Mary,

Yes, they are twigs on the branch so it would be 'irrepressible curiosity' as you put it. But you must know what a 'pull' curiosity has!

I'll wait to see what the newspaper articles produce when I receive them in a few days time and then I will make a decision as to whether to splash out on the death certificates. Got a funny feeling that I won't be making that splash.

Hi everyone.

I was just reading the postings on the subject of RCE's which answers a question I was going to ask. However, my ancestor was a gamekeeper in Kilbarchan when he died. I'm in the area at Easter but probably won't have time to visit the NRH (too many relatives to visit!) but had been hoping there may be somewhere in the parish where I could find the info. Would this just be wishful thinking and my only options are NRH, sending for the DC or waiting for Scotlandspeople?

Can't believe everytime I have a question I seem to find a recent discussion on it! :D

Hi FJ

I'm actually living in Kilbarchan.
Could you PM me details. I'm hoping to get into Paisley Reference Library in the next week to check a few other things (Might take a bit longer but that depends on whether my daughter goes to term :D or pops early :(

Hi Lynda

You really have the bug now haven't you - even to coming back and letting everybody know how you are gettin on. - Thanks :D :D
The great thing about TS is that we all remeber when we were trying to get to grips with finding out about our ancestors and were helped by friendly folk from right across the world. Now we have moved on and have become the helpers. Its almost as good helping someone else as finding out about your own family.
We all are still learning though. Every day I learn something fascinating and new from the posts here.
The important rule is help others to find out for themselves.
Find your own information You know the expression 'Seeing is believing' well it applies here too.

What are the entries in the "Relation to Head of Family" Column? That should give you a clue as to how the elder Catherine fits into the scheme of things.

....couldn't resist sneaking a look .......

The Household, along with marital status and the relationship to the Head is.

James WHITE....Head Mar 58
Catherine..........Wife Mar 5?
John..................Son S 33
James...............Son S 31(?)
Catherine.........Grand-Daur 15
Catherine.........Grand-Daur 5
Sarah...............Grand-Daur 3

In the name column for the 15 year old Catherine, right up against the right hand margin is the word " Son's ", - thus

James WHITE................|Head Mar 58
Catherine......................|Wife Mar 5?
John.............................|Son S 33
James...........................| Son S 31(?)
Catherine..............Sons|Grand-Daur 15
Catherine......................| Do 5
Sarah............................| Do 3

[" | " to represent the vertical borderline.]

I've never previously seen such an annotation in the name column, obviously intended to clarify the info in the relationship column........

The only explanation that I can put forward is that both John and James had daughters named Catherine, which would fit in terms of the name of their mother ...............

There is nothing quite like opening that image you hope is one of your lot and finding out it is, and that's the hook that catches us all!

Every new bit of information you get might answer one question, but it never fails to cause you to ask new ones! That 1901 census with the mystery older Catherine is the kind of thing that sets us off on another trail.

 S'wunnerful
