Does that still work if the OS was put on the system a while ago and it was bought with the new laptop?

I think I did find a solution somewhere and it said that it was a problem caused by formating of the Hard Drive in XP and then installing Vista on top and it causes problems.

So far it only seems to effect files from the Java Browser at SP.

I've got a feeling it dates from when you registered it, if you did register it!

If you haven't done yet, do it now and make use of the Microsoft Vista "Help period" (though I use the word Help and Microsoft in the same sentence with tongue in cheek [comp-hammer] )

I recently bought a new computer - managed to find one that came with vista or XP & I chose XP. However, it was the latest version of XP which has had the Java routines removed from IE - I understand this was because of a copyright dispute between MSoft & Sun. I had to download Java from Sun website. IE still does not work very well on any site using Java so I had to install Firefox & its Java addons & it almost works on most websites.

It could well relate to the Java issue between Msoft and Sun and have nothing to do with XP vs Vista or ScotlandsPeople

Thus said, I was using direct download on my old laptop & continue to use same. It works for me.

Just got back on line today. Brand new laptop now has new motherboard and fan

Have tried images from SP with Java and its working. Praise the Lord - and I am not being irreverent. :D

I tried to download Irfanview Trish and got an icon on the desktop and everything but when I tried to open it, got a black window with the message that it was not downloaded, so I kind of gave up as I was having serious problems with laptop by then. Dell sent me a MAN, a REAL MAN, to fix it :D :D

SO glad to know Pandabean has Vista [cheers]

On with the motley!

Vista problems

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Apr 16, 2007 9:54 pm

My new laptop came with Vista. I had to go to the Java website and download the newest update even though my computer was brand new. However, once I did that it handled SP images just fine.

My problem is that it disconnects me from the phone service at random. My last pc did the same thing and the techies decided that because I live out in the country there must be a lot of "noise" on the phone line which my pc was sensitive too.

Whatever! I'm a housewife, not a geek! Guess it's better than an insensitive computer though.

By all means try Java again, but you may find it easier overall to go the "Direct Download" route.

Very different from ActiveX and Java, and takes a wee bit of getting used to if you've never had to download images that way, but I think that you'll find a much higher satisfaction rating amongst Direct Download users compared to ActiveX and Java. It can also require some knowledge of how your computer is set up to handle images, i.e. there can sometimes be a default programme which cuts in, but which is not necessarily the best programme to use to view the images.

See computers [comp03] [computer] [drowning]

I've made the comment eslewhere that SP are working on a replacement for ActiveX, - for some time now a substantial number of users haven't been able to get it to work.

Go into SP as normal.

On the home page there's a row of buttons at the top. One of these is "Help & Resources".

Just below the right hand end of that button, there's a clickable link to "My Details".

Click on "My Details", then go right down to the bottom and you'll see "Image Viewer". Hit the button to the right of the viewer already showing (Java in your case) and you should see a drop down list ofthe viewers available. Click on Direct Download.

Lastly, and unless you do this nothing gets changed, - click on the "Update Details" button bottom left.

Doing it is simple, describing it not so simple :!:

No stupidity at all involved. Who was it who said "Everything's easy, when you know how!"
