Thanks David. It shows very much what I expected. Andrew Boden & Agnes Ross seem to have had an interesting relationship. They actually married in October 1870 just weeks before their second child, Mary, was born and are together in the 1871 census. However, by 1881 Agnes & the children are living with her mother & various other siblings & Andrew is lodging elsewhere. Haven't looked for Andrew's death yet but Agnes lived at the same address until her death in 1902.

Given that Walter's father, Andrew BODEN (as confirmed by the RCE entry) and Agnes ROSS subsequently married, always assuming that they were free to marry when Walter was conceived, then he was legitimated in Scots Law by that later marriage.Muriel wrote:Thanks David.
