Here from the IGI is the birth of:

Christian Goven
8 Jan 1803 West Linton, Peebles, Scotland
Father: Findlater Goven
Mother: Christian Noble

So she was subtracting a few years from her age later on

Hi Sarah,

:D
Thats great isn't it.
Can't find him on Freecen but Ms Zuain is there. Her name according to them is Christian Quair so that rules her out.
I really appreciate you having a look for me - I keep coming back to her every few weeks and she's driving me mad.

Other children of this couple born in West Linton are:

James Goven
18 Jan 1799

William Goven
5 Dec 1800

Margaret Govan
10 May 1805

John Goven
1 Apr 1807

Might be worth finding out what happened to them...

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for that. Naughty lady chopping a few years off - you wouldn't catch me doing that  .
Now to find a connection between the two of them. I know Helen Givens parents were Robert Given and Catherine Renton b1781 but that doesn't help so far.

Hi Paula,
Okay, last of the series for Findlater and Christian:

They married in Dunsyre, Lanark a mere 4 months before the birth of wee James

Findlater Govan & C. Noble
16 Sep 1798
Dynsyre, Lanark, Scotland

Now, as you say, to figure out what this all means :-k

At least it gives the impression of getting somewhere to find all these people :D
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Think I'm going to have to sleep on this - I'm getting really confused.
Should have been in bed ages ago as I've got a job interview in the morning.

Thanks very much for all your help.

Hi again,
I know I said it was the last of Findlater last time, but I had forgotten to get his birth. Findlater's parents were James Goven and Margaret Lawther
Born 6 Apr 1777 West Linton, Peebles

He had two brothers, but neither of them Robert :(
James Govan 23 Jun 1771 West Linton
Janet Govan 5 Jun 1774 West Linton
John Govan 12 Mar 1780 West Linton

Hmmm. I was hoping that he would have a brother Robert

Well, back to the drawing board. It's only 6:30 in the evening where I am, so I'll carry on a bit longer while you get some well-earned rest! Good luck with the interview!

Hi Paula,
There is a Christina Gavin born in 1802 who died in 1875 in St Rollox, Glasgow City, Lanarkshire. It sounds like her and it also possibly means the poorhouse and a non-relative signing the death cert. :? Not sure because I haven't seen the image, just played with the search function. I'll let you decide if you think it's worth it (depends on the outcome of your job interview!)

Another way to go is to see if there are any poorhouse records for her. They seem to have got her birthdate about right, for one thing, so whoever signed the cert knew a few details that she didn't want to admit  There is an outside chance that whatever is on her application will shed light on her relationship to Christina Melville [-o< Well, we can always hope :D

All the best,
Sarah

According to the original 1851 that surname would be GIVIN and not IRVINE....for wee 4 year old FIN* the grandson.... ah well nice try Ancestry..........

Let's see.....so now he looks to be the son of Adam.....and I think this is him as Findlater and his family in Edinburgh 10 years later.

Name: Findlater Given
Age: 14
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Relationship: Son
Father's name: Adam
Mother's name: Jane
Gender: Male
Where born: Canongate, Edinr
Registration Number: 685/1
Registration district: St George
Civil parish: Edinburgh St Cuthberts
County: Midlothian
Address: Water Of Leith Broken Stairs
Occupation: Scholar
ED: 107
Page: 9 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 54
Line: 3
Roll: CSSCT1861_125
Household Members: Name Age
Adam Given 38
Christina Given 10
Findlater Given 14
Jane Given 40

which all ties neatly with the good stuff Sarah has been working on!

Now jump back to something you posted earlier.......

You stated you knew Helen's parents names were Robert GIVEN and Catherine RENTON. I assume this is from her MC?? Anyhow...the BIVRI does have one birth to a couple that I think might be them....

GOVAN, Elizabeth Christening
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 1 Mar 1830
Christening Date: 28 Mar 1830 Recorded in: Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland
Father: Robert GOVAN
Mother: Cathrine RENTON
Source: FHL Film 103115 + Dates: 1818 - 1855

and then there is a Gavin family in 1841 with a Catherine as head and as a widow in Edinburgh but there is no Helen at home......only David, John, William, Mary and Elizabeth. All the boys are in the printing/bookbinding trades if that might throw a clue to anyone! I guess the next thing would be to trace some of these kids forward and try and find out for certain the parents names but it's past my bedtime!

I'll probably still be thinking when I'm dreaming though :?

Best wishes
Jean

Love that address!! :D

Since I am on a time zone an hour earlier than Jean, I was able to prop my eyelids up with some toothpicks and stay awake a little longer... In addition to the birth of Elizabeth that Jean found for Robert Govan and Catharine Renton, there is a much earlier birth to the same couple. Thankfully, her name is Helen!

Helen Givan 12 Jan 1812 Newton, Midlothian

According to the IGI, Helen's parents Robert Govan and Catharine Renton married 26 Oct 1810 in Edinburgh

But I don't find any children in between Helen in 1812 and Elizabeth in 1830-- odd! There must be more, but who knows what spelling they are lurking under!

I'll give it a start. Here is David in 1851:

Name: David Gavine
Age: 34
Estimated birth year: abt 1817
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name: Margaret
Gender: Male
Where born: Colinton, Midlothian
Parish Number: 685/3
Civil parish: Edinburgh St Cuthberts
County: Midlothian
Address: 94 Pleasance
Occupation: Printer Pressman
ED: 2A
Page: 13
Household schedule number: 56
Line:13
Roll:CSSCT1851_185
Household Members:
Charles Gavine 2
David Gavine 34
David Gavine 6
George Gavine 4
Margaret Gavine 32

His marriage is too early to have parents names on it, but his death might. There are 3 David g?v?n* deaths between 1855 and 1900, birth year 1817 +/-1 One is in Midlothian. If you're curious about these folks you might want to follow him forward a few more censuses to see where he ends up. I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open now, despite the toothpicks... [snore]
I'll pass the baton to whoever is awake now...
