Hi Maud
The main thing is don't give up - info sometimes comes from the most unexpected places.
All the best.

Maud,
There is a problem with the baseball outfit and the word "yankee"... since there is a baseball team called the Yankees! So the "second Yankee" might not refer to a second person born in the USA. But, it might!
How old would you estimate the Alex in the photo is?
I have tried looking in Youngstown, Ohio for your Alex.
There is an Alexander McKellar, age 49, who came to the US from Scotland in 1923. He is a "Tinner"(?) in a steel mill.
His wife Janet is 38
Daughter Margaret 15
Son Duncan 13
All born in Scotland
There is an Alexander Macauley, age 47, born in Ohio (but his parents born in Scotland). He is a railroad conductor
Wife Mary 43 born in Ohio, parents born in England
Son Donald 20 born in Ohio
If we step out of Ohio, there are 22 Alexander Mccullochs in the USA in 1930 and 26 Alexander Mcculloughs. Without an idea of the age, I can't make a guess as to who the right one might be. So, if you could estimate the person's age in 1930 I'll narrow it down for you and also take in other possible spellings.

Alexander the 2nd Yankee
Thank you Sarah for the suggestions re Alexander.
Judging from the look of him in the photo, I would imagine him to have been in his late teens or early 20s, difficult to tell though, which Alexander he could have been .
There were two Alexander McCullochs, one born 1876 he married Sarah O`Neil, they could have had a son named Alexander
There was also another born 1903 married Bridget Duffy, so could he have been one of them, or could the one in the photograph have been their son?
There were quite a number of other brothers, who could also have had a son named Alexander, it seems to have been a popular name with the mMcCullochs!
So you can imagine what difficulty it is for me trying to assume which one he could be.
He resembled my father so much, that at first I thought the photo was of him when a young man, so it was obvious he had to have been a close relation, and must have been either a McCulloch or the son of one of them!
From the comment on the back of the photo, I think the mention of the second Yankee, must have been referring to the second one born in USA
I`m just going round in circles really, and sadly there are no relations for me to ask, at least none that I know of.
I know there has to be relations on my father`s side, I remember visiting some of them as a little girl, before my father died, but unfortunately after his death, my mother seems to have "cut us off" from knowing them
I do`nt suppose I`ll ever know the reason why.
Unless of course, she was afraid that we might have found out that my father was ilegitimate, that is the only reason I can think of anyway
Thank you anyway for trying to find out for me, McCulloch is such a common name, there are probably many of them, and any relation would probably not know about me either!
I can only hope that perhaps one of them may be researching his family and hopefully stumble across a link that might lead to me through my
father,
But, whether that will happen before I fall of
my perch, I do`nt know!
Still, I can always hope...

I'm sorry, Maud, nothing obvious is coming up. Could the photo have been of a Barr? Or was there no contact at all with his natural father's family? What was his father's first name?
I think there are sites where one can post unknown photos to see if anyone recognizes them, but I can't remember where offhand. Is anyone familiar with such a site?
Best,
Sarah

Alerxander who was he .....
Hi
Yes it is possible the photo could have been of a Barr, but I would not know who. The only names IO have are those I have managed to gather both from the census information and BMDs of the family I could trace.
I do know know that there was a Barr, I think his name was Cameron Barr, who went to the USA, but whether the photo was of him or a relative I have no way of knowing unfortunately.
I think it will just have to remain as another family mystery!

Maud,
Here is an interesting article that was featured in the Rootsweb Review about a woman searching for 7 1/2 years for the identity of a man in a portrait-- and finally succeeding.
I thought it might encourage you!

Also, the website I was thinking of is called Somebody's Links: Genealogical Treasures Found. I don't think you can post the actual photo, but you could try putting a description of the picture and the inscription, to see if anyone recognizes it. The site is to be found here:

Good luck!

Maud Jarvis wrote:In researching my paternal family history, I have found out that the relatives who were in America (I never knew their surnames) must have been related to my father, I have a couple of photos, one of Jean & Mary, whos is who Idon`t know, and one of Aex, the second Yankee ? he bears a strong resemblance to my father.
I now know that my father was the illegitimate son of Christina McCulloch, and am trying to trace any descendants from Ezekiel McCulloch (Christina`s father) apparently one of his sons or could have been a grandson? went to America and settled there, I believe it was Youngston, Ohio.
The photo of Alex the second Yankee, may possibly be a cousin of my father?
So, if anyone visits this board and is researching the McCulloch family would they please contact me, so that we can exchange information?
my father later "adopted" the surname of Barr his natural father, I can find no trace of him after 1896 (when my father was born in Port Glasgow)
Ezekiel McCulloch was born in Ireland, but I don`t know where. He married in Tradeston Glasgow in 1862 to Caroline Fraser, he died in Port Glasgow where he eventually settled.
