Change of direction:
Back to Catherine Gracie in 1851 in Old Monkland. Remember she had a son called William Gracie age 8 born in Old Monkland. Well, there is no such person, but on SP there IS a William McGhee born in Old Monkland in February 1843, father Robert, mother Catherine. So, he was their son, but for some reason she was going by Gracie that year :?

And here they are together in 1861, back to McGee:

Manse Street Ladhope P
Cathrine McGee, 60, Head, born Morton, Dumfrieshire
William McGee, 18, Son, born Old Monkland, Lanark, Railway Servant
William Bulloch, 22, Lodger, born Cumbernald, Dumbarton, Joiner

Still following William...

By 1871 William has married and had a son named after his father:

19 Kinnoull Causeway, Perth, Perthshire
William McGhee, 27, Head, born Coatbridge, Old Monkland, Goods Guard
Mary McGhee, 29, Wife, born Coatbridge, Old Monkland, Goods Guard Wife
Robert H McGhee, 3, Son, born Perth, Perthshire, Goods Guard Son
Janet H McGhee, 2, Daughter, born Perth, Perthshire, Goods Guard Daur

1881
Crichton St Crichtons Buildings, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
William McGhee, 38, Head, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Railway Guard
Mary McGhee, 39, Wife, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
Robert H McGhee, 14, Son, born Perth, Perthshire, Grocer (Apprentice)
Janet H McGhee, 11, Daughter, born Perth, Perthshire, Scholar
Ann H McGhee, 6, Daughter, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Peter Hay, 3, Nephew, born Blantyre, Lanarkshire
Ann Hay, 3, Niece, born Blantyre, Lanarkshire

By 1891 his twin niece and nephew are called McGhee also.

418 New Road, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
William McGhee, 48, Head, born Mountsand, Lanarkshire, Engine Driver
Mary McGhee, 48, Wife, born Mountsand, Lanarkshire
Robert McGhee, 23, Son, born Perth, Perthshire, Stationary Engin Driver
Annie McGhee, 16, Daur, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Warehouse Girl
Annie McGhee, 12, Niece, born Blantyer, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Peter McGhee, 12, Nephew, born Blantyer, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Archd McGhee, 9, Son, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scholar

By 1901 Mary is widowed, I think. At least William is not to be seen.

418 New Rd, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Robert McGhee, 32, Head, born Perth, Perthshire, Engine Driver
Mary McGhee, 56, Mother, born C Monkland, Lanarkshire
Annie McGhee, 26, Sister, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Fareswoman Rose Dressg
Archibald McGhee, 19, Brother, born Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Engineer-appre

I wonder what the mother's maiden name is on William's death certificate?! :o

Hi All,

Again thanks for all the info. I'll have to spend some time looking through it but it certainly looks as though much of what you have all found fits, though still no real clue why the Gracie name keeps cropping up in the children and not McConnan :?:

Peter Cunningham and Jean Mcghie also lived in Langloan in 1851 and Peter worked at Langloan ironworks. Also as Jean says their 3rd daughter was named Catherine Gracie.

The sun is shining and the garden beckons so I'm afraid I'll have to look at all this later.

Hi,
I'm still wondering where the McConnan name came from then disappeared and why Catherine was sometimes Mcghee (various spellings) and sometimes Gracie. Any ideas?
Also is it possible to find out what happened to Robert. He seems to have disappeared by 1851.
I've looked for Margarets death but no success.

This looks like it:

1895 MILLER MARGARET MCGHEE F 66 CAMLACHIE GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/02 0665

I saw the marriage you spoke of on the IGI, then looked her up in the other censuses:

1861
Millers Land Church Street, Coatbridge, Lanark
John Miller, 29, Head, born New Monkland, Lanark, Joiner
Margaret Miller, 33, Wife, born Morton, Dumfries
David Wilson, 28, Boarder, born North Leith, Edinburgh, Saw Miller

Something odd about this next one-- where did they get East Gordon, Renfrewshire as her birth place? Maybe it was from another line...

1871
30, Glasgow Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire
John Millar, 40, Head, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire, Joiner
Margaret Millar, 42, Wife, born East Gordon, Renfrewshire
James Millar, 3, Son, born New Monkland, Lanarkshire
John Moffat, 25, Lodger, born Dumfries, Dumfrieshire, Engine Fetter
John Harrower, 24, Lodger, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Engine Fetter

Is this Margaret in 1891? It seems that her joiner husband has died, as well as her son, and she is a servant again :(

1891
The Manse, Dunlop, Ayrshire
Janet Auld, 53, Head, born Riccarton, Ayrshire, Inn Keeper
Allan Auld, 30, Son, born Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Railway Porter
Margaret Auld, 25, Daur, born Kilwinning, Ayrshire
Ninian Auld, 23, Son, born Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Railway Clerk
Euphemia Auld, 21, Daur, born Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Dress Maker
James Auld, 17, Son, born Dunlop, Ayrshire, Railway Clerk
Matthew Hendry, 21, Visitor, born Largs, Ayrshire, Gardener
Margaret Miller, 60, Servant, born Morton, Dumfriesshire, General Servt
Jane Fulton, 20, Servt, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, General Servt

Hi,
Yes that is her death entry - it gives her parents as Robert Mcghee and Catherine Gracie and was notified by son-in-law James Hamilton. Excellent!

Do you really think she possibly have gone back to being a servant in Ayrshire in 1891 then come back to Glasgow where she died?

Found William's Marriage to Mary Hay 10th Nov 1865 in Perth. It gives his parents as Robert McGee Horse Keeper and Catherine Gracie.

But still no clue how the McConnan and Gracie names have become interchangable.

Wouldn't he have been her brother-in-law? Or am I mixing people up.

Doesn't sound too likely, does it? Unless she was left penniless at the death of her husband, which could have been the case.

One day, something will jump out to clarify the Gracie/McConnon conundrum! :?
Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Yes of course he was brother-in-law, sorry my mis-typing!

It would be great if something did jump out re the Gracie/McConnan conumdrum. Do you think there would be anything in the Kirk Sessions if they exist for that area?

Liz

PS As I'm new to this could you explain how to put in the quotes that one is responding to. Thanks
